Posting on behalf of my friend who has a 03 SX600R, we were riding in Grand Marais area on Sunday night and it was snowing really hard, I'd say blizzard conditions. We were riding for about 6 hours that day and about 5 hours in his temp light started flashing it was on flash then a pause followed by 3 quick flashes, any idea what this could be? He had no choice to drive it back about a hour with no problems, we checked the coolant level and it seemed to be alright. Just looking for some ideas of what it could be possibly the water pump?? thanks

according to the service manual 3 flashes each one lasting 0.75sec and a 0.25 sec interval in between then a 1.75sec pause and repeat the hole cycle indicates problems with the thumb warmer variable resistor disconnected.

When you say the temp light are you talking about the orange light or the icon in the LCD screen???

The orange light is there to draw your attention to the icons in the LCD screen.

First time I saw the orange light I thought I was overheating turned out I was only low on gas!!!

The red light that flashes when you start the sled with the temp sign on it, not my sled but I don't remember any orange light. It will really come on when your low on gas, never noticed that before!

Look closer it's not a temp sign its a triangle with a exclamation mark.

The temp icon is in black on the LCD next to the gas level barr graph you can see them all when you first start up you machine during the self test.

And yes the orange / red light comes for any abnormal conditions, it scared me last week end and then I read the $%@$# manual.

He is talking about an SXR, they don't have an LCD display with different icons, they only have the temp light, which flashes the different codes. They also do not have a low fuel warning, except for the gauge. The LCD gauge is on the vipers, venoms, and four strokes

Thanks Yamaholic, Like I said it's not my sled, it's a buddies. I have a 03 Viper. So I was correct about the temp light. Going to take to the dealer, I personally think that it's water pump...

if it is flashing the way you said that it was, then it was flashing a code, not the actual water temp. If it is the water temp, it just blinks with the same duration every time. You said it would blink once, pause, then three quick blinks, which is a code. This would tell me that its not the waterpump, as there is no diagnostic check for that, and it isn't overheating. I don't know the codes myself, but a lot of people do know them on here, or ask your dealer, or get a service manual, or they may even be on the tech page. Hope this helps

Hey ....listen to yamaholic... SJ say's..
that's the code for faulty water temp sensor....unplug at the head...check connector....if good connection...sensor is bad....

So sorry to revive this old post .... but I have this problem occurring right now on the Mnt. Viper....

8 of them..... 1/2 second flashes in a row after it's warmed up........ then repeats itself on a loop.

I checked the connection and it seems good, so I guess next step is to grab a new sensor. Anybody know the part number or cost for the sensor?????

Thanks everybody!!!!!

Mike
