I just bought a 91 phazer II for $100. I bought it not running. It does not have spark at the plugs, where would a good spot to start looking? The biggest question is about the compression. What should it be? I tried to check it with a old tester but could not get it tight enough to seal it, I did get the gauge up to 75 but it would not hold any pressure. I went and bought a new one. I am only able to get it 60 and it holds there on both sides. It the rings are bad what are the odds both side are bad and holding the same pressure?

first off unplug the TORS wires from the carbs and then on the harness side plug them into each other ..........if no spark still now we have to start digging in to the rest of the system ...........as far as compression make sure you are hold the throttle wide open .........if still not in the 120 range add a little oil to each cylinder about 1oz or so then retry ..........if no better time to pull the heads

i have the same 91 phazer 2. bought for 200 off family 3 years ago now. an when i started to think about tunin it up. i checked compression an it was right around that area 55-60 psi. took heads off to see i had blow by on the rings. rings ground smooth to side of piston an fused together. threw in new pistons an rings, new gaskets. did compression test an it was around 85-90psi. cycled engine to seat rings tried again an was around 98-105psi.

I was just thinking it seemed strange that both sides were the same. I thought one side might go bad but not both at the same time. I lent out my compression tester so I'll have to wait to check again.

yea as soon as ya get it back check it out. winter is right around the corner. but yea both the mag an pto side had this problem. could have been because of the mid-range lean on the old butterfly carbs. to lean, jugs got to hot an started to eat them again into the pistons.

I think the compression tester I bought from harbor freight is not working right. I can only get 60 psi on my sled and when I put it on my sons it will only go to 60 also and his runs just fine. Yesterday I put the old one that I cannot get tight and it hit 100 psi but would not hold it there.

Harbor freight is good for throw-away tools when you need a tool that you aren't going to use too often. Before I get all kinds of "I own this and that from Harbor Freight and its great" I own a couple Harbor Freight tools myself but I wouldn't buy precision instruments from them. jmo

I took it back today and exchanged it but if I get the same results I am going to return it.

Same thing with the new one I exchanged it for, will not go over 60. Where should I go to get one that works? The one I have that gets up to 100 but will not hold seems to be working good. The reason it will not hold is that I cannot get a wrench on it to tighten it down. What one do you guy use?
