Which one for weekend trail riding(76,77,78 )? Fuel mileage is a bonus.

Thanks Thunderjet440. Trying to find differences in the engines. Not really caring about top-end speed. Wondering about parts, reliability and how much fuel the 440 drinks compared to the 340. etc. I only ride for about 4 hours at a time.

I cannot say about the fuel mileage on a 340 Exciter, but I have had many 338 YAMAHA'S and they have all been very good on fuel.
Though the 340 Exciter engine is a wee bit different in that it is rated at 38 hp (That is what I was told though and have no first hand knowledge, yet.) with a single carb and pipe which is more than any of the others and may affect mileage a little.
That said, I think the difference would be negligible, probably a wee better than a 433, which isn't bad, and nothing I would worry about cuz your biggest enemy there, provided correct-carb-tuning, the rest of the drive-train correct and set-up, will be your right thumb.
Very reliable sled. Have fun.

get one post '78 for fuel mileage. This was the year that they changed from a round slide carb to a butterfly, and it improved fuel consumption. I get around 10 mpg on my '79 440.
Overall the 440 is a pretty zippy sled, it will take my father's pro-action venture 600 in a quarter mile at 65-70 mph.
