I'm little stumped now so ill throw this out to the experts. I've got 98 srx that backfires and bogs then when I get out going starts to breakup at about 1/4 to 1/2 throttle. Cleaned the carbs. Still does it. Cleaned them again. Still does it. Took the carbs off my other srx that runs perfect. Still does it. Compression is good. After running it around the yard I came to the conclusion that its leaning out because plugs are dry and light colored. Could it be the fuel pump? Could it be a timing issue?

I've got a video I can show someone of what it's doing but I would have to email it.
Any help is always appreciated.

Have you changed the gas ? I know this is probably a stupid question, but I got my sled going the other night after I put the stock exhaust I got from you. It was sorta doing the same thing until I got some fresh gas in there. I like to check the simple stuff first. Good luck figuring it out.

Fresh gas and already bypassed. I just found by putting new plugs in it ran better. But still breaks up once you nail it.

If post #2 and post #3 don't pan out I would check A. Plug caps B. Stator, could be getting weak or flywheel could have just enough rust on it to be putting a fly in your ointment so to speak.

I just had same problem with my 98 and devilinbluedress recommended changing plug caps. Easy and only 10$. Changed the caps and also used the proper br9ecs plugs and now it runs great.

sounds electrical, i would bet the condensation of storage did something funny.
rust on flywheel---> plugs---->plug caps----> stator?. then look deeper

If its leaning out could be an air leak some where. Maybe do a leakdown test or check your carb boots make sure no rips, I suppose it could also be the crank seal leaking. A compression test doesn't always tell the whole story.

Is it only bogging on the bottom then fine once you open it up? Have you checked the reeds to see if there is one broken? I have seen similar issues to this with broken reeds but the plugs are usually wet.

Won't gain any rpm speed past like 5500rpm to 6000rpm just goes flat and breaks up. Has to be electrical. I've ruled out everything in the fuel system.

With electrical every one always jumps to conclusions. Start with the simple things first. Get an multi meter and start testing. Plugs, caps stator. Easy stuff.

Ill be testing all the electrical components this weekend.

Sounds like it could be a pickup coil problem. I know when I got my sled I was having all sorts of problems. I ended up buying an aftermarket pickup coil (which by the way was not a great purchase) only because the stator tested fine and through Yamaha you can't buy just the pickup coil. Put the after market coil in and it ran but still wasn't right so I finally broke down and bought OEM stator/pickup coil and it ran like a top after that. So I tend to lean towards that before the stator if you have a known good one to try. Just an idea.
