Trying to get another friend addicted to sleds. He seems to be interested in 03-04 rx1. I know nothing of these sleds. Any opinions appreciated.
The RX1 was a 4 cylinder carbd sled. In 06 when they went to the Apex, EFI was introduced. The chassis on an Apex vs an RX1 to me is a big difference. I prefer the forward handlebars of the Apex chassis vs RX1 chassis. With that said the RX1 was a good sled and can be picked up for cheap. Motors are reliable as well. You could always add a pivot riser if needed.
I do love the Yamaha 4storks though.

I had an 05 rxwar limited so i did a bit of research before I bought it nos in 07. loved the sled once I had it set for me but up-graded and sold it to my brother to upgrade from his viper last season.
03-04 rx had the proaction and all the inherent flaws of that skid. 05 was 1st year for monoshock before they went apex.
the 03-04 could have oil burning issues as there was a ring problem that was solved in 05. most times it was minor, just ask previous owner if it had any oil burning issues.
all the rx series needed some clutch fine tuning as can be attested by a lot of site members.
seating position can be adjusted to be more apex like by adding a riser and an apex/attack/rs nitro seat. well documented mods over on the 4stroke site.
check the exh donuts as they are a known problem. you can test with a pair of rags. you block the exits with the motor running and the motor should stall or almost stall if they are good.
over all it is a really good trail/lake sled once set properly for the rider. it can go tree picking in the fields but will require a bit more effort/skill than a smaller sled. the power is addictive and reliable as all yamys are. your buddy would not go wrong buying one.
