If I could afford it right now I'd ceramic coat my pipes on my SRX but ain't happening at this present time so I'm looking at painting my pipes AGAIN and would like to ditch the heat shields because they are getting kind of dinged up and all anyway. What I figured on doing is painting the pipes and using header wrap in place of the shields and insulation. Will this hold the heat in the pipes as well? I imagine that the insulation is no doubt pretty beat anyway so I'm thinking the wrap would be better than what I have now.

well, wrapping them will at least help, hard to beat the oem set up they hold the heat well and keep the engine hitting peak rpm, cold pipes will lower your peak rpm.
if the stock shields are wasted you can do the wrap but keep it in the same place and everybit as much coverage as stock or the performance will suffer. Last time i priced it was kinda expensive hard to think that you couldnt reinsulate your stock shields for less money, its just 2 stroke fiberglass muffler packing under the shields, you can use large clamps from home depot to reapply the shiields. Check out the pricing both ways see which one works out cheaper.

I priced some header wrap this afternoon and yeah I think I'll go a different route.15 ft is like $42 from my local auto parts place,I know I can get it cheaper online but just the same I might see if I can wet sand and buff the heat shields and get rid of some of the marks at least.Where's the best place to get some of this muffler packing Don?I see Dennis Kirk has it but is it any good?

Enough of them getting parted out you might be able to get replacement pipes for less than the wrap would cost......Less work too!

Only problem with getting used pipes that unless I get a set from a sled with relatively low miles on it I'd be concerned that the insulation would need replacing in them too.I found a few spots to get some muffler packing, now it's just a matter of measuring up how much I'll need to do 2 sets. Thanks for the opinions guys.

Get header wrap on ebay. I bought some 20 foot for ten dollars shipped not long ago.
