97 sx 700 reed spacer question

yes.

another thing that helps is to drop the needle half a spot(shim) if the engines stock.

My stock '97 700SX is like that too when I'm creep'n thru @ a steady 3-5000 rpm.

so I'm looking into this cause I like perfect.. and a reed assembly is $93 of course x 3..ouch.. but they sell 'reed valve stoppers' (8DJ-13616-00-00) $11.00 for 2 x 3 $33.00 is this the solution? difficult to replace? tia.

Not hard, the stoppers are held on to the reed blocks by little screws. If you are trying to eliminate the gargle and your stoppers are in good shape, you could grind/notch the stoppers, or add the reed spacers. You don't need both, only one or the other will do. Both methods have been discussed on here often and at length, a search will give plenty of reading on the details of each solution.

No, the reed valve stopper is the outer cage assembley that limits the reeds movement. This is a widely discussed and much experienced problem with the SX engine. The reed stopper blocks the transfer port and causes that mid range burble. You can do spacers, or go to aftermarket reeds. Some do vForce (like I did), some space the stock reeds and put on carbon fiber petals.

guy on e.bay has just spacers 3 for $80..no bolts no gaskets..anyone seen complete kits for sale?

You should be able to find spacer kits from Bender, Hauck, mountain performance, and possibly Dennis Kirk. (If memory serves me correct) Benders spacer kit comes with gaskets. In Benders kit you should get 3 6mm thick spacers and 3 intake gaskets and 12 5-6mm longer bolts. Don't remember pricing. You may want to look in the classifieds section.

i got got this exact kit. Although it says twin on the add, it's for a triple. And u can verify with the seller. It comes with 3 aluminum reed spacers, gaskets for BOTH sides of EACH spacer, and it also comes with the longer bolts. It's only $50. You won't find a better deal than that.

If your sx motor has the later setup with the coils mounted down on the reeds instead of up on the air box you will need to get even longer bolts for the top. IIRC it's 4 bolts across the top of the pto and center cylinder. The bolts that came with my vForce kit were too short and only grabbed the first 2 threads. That was no bueno so I had to get 4 more from the Home Depot.

I have the coils on airbox..a '97..these e.bay ones will fit all redhead triples?

Are they 1/4" ?

I don't remember the exact size. If u have an ebay account, u can ask the seller any questions that u wish. But I do know that the kit comes with literally everything u need ( spacers, all gaskets, longer bolts). Well worth the $50 IMO. Any other spacers that come close to that price don't include all 6 gaskets and/or the bolts required.

wondering how long these take to install?..seems like little if any room for them.

It takes about an hour start to finish. In the time it takes to pull the carbs and inspect the reeds, you can have the spacers installed.

2012-11-10 14.51.18.jpgmy reeds are already on what looks to be a 1/2" grey metal wedge shaped block from what I can see in the pic
