Hello and thank you ahead of time for the help and advice. I finally bought a sled! Today I got a mint 2002 SXR 600 with 1900 miles. My last sled was an 81 El Tigre which I sold in 1997! Needless to say, it's been a while.

I am lucky to have an ethanol free 91-octane-only gas station down the street. The original owner has alway run regular gas (with eth) and only yamaha oil. I prefer non-eth in most small engines. Will I need to worry about a lean/rich condition with non-eth?

Any service items to take care of at this mileage? The original owner just had carbs cleaned, new hyfax, and carbides installed. It looks brand new! Can't wait! He has a reverse kit that he never installed but wants another $300 for it. I spent all the money I should for a while but wondering if I am an idiot for passing it up. Thoughts?

Thanks

Good find there! I believe 02 600 came with the dual bulb headlight/hotter ignition system. Take a good look at the W arm (front part of skid, shaped like W) known to crack at random. I have an E free pump up the street from me as well. Doesn't get used very often and I am leary fuel may be stale. I choose fresher premium fuel with ethanol due to most my sleds being power valved engines (yours is what they call the "red head") As long as the 91 e free is fresh you shouldn't have any concern there. As far as $300 for reverse kit, that right in the neighborhood of what they go for so no biggie if you decide later on you want reverse.

Ya I wouldnt worry about a lean/rich condition, these sleds were built to run on non ethanol fuel. In Canada all (or most) 91-93 Octane is ethanol free, I run it in everything except my car and truck and Ive never had an issue.

If it does worry you, run a tank through, then pull your plugs and check the coloring. One thing I will say if your running ethanol fuel clean your Carbs EVERY season, most guys do anyway, but ethanol fuel will clog up carb passages faster than non.

Usually the jetting from the factory is plenty rich and should have no worries being lean. You may want to look into reed spacers for that motor as the redheads have a minor design flaw in the intake system. DO NOT PANIC! What happens is it is burbly in the mid range and sounds kind funny and if you put spacers in it it helps the burbly-ness go away and run smoother. just food for thought.
