What are the pro's and cons of the TORS switch. My wifes 99 sx vmax 500 started to act up meaning not running right. Could rev up fine for a bit and then it would pudder at about 3k rpm right to the handle bar. Let out of it and would run fine again. Then repeat the same. I by passed the TORS switch and runs perfect again. I guess my question would be is there any harm being done to the engine by having this by passed? Or should it be replaced before any long runs? Thanks for the input. Rob

It is not a good idea to bypass the TORS. It should only be bypassed for doing what you did, troubleshooting. It is a safety feature to keep the snowmobile from taking off on you if the throttle sticks for some reason. Check your throttle cable adjustment, might be too tight. If thats ok, then troubleshoot the sensor/switch, one by the carbs & one in the thumb throttle.

There is one where somebody had it disconnected and it wrecked his sled. Can't seem to find it, but just seeing the pic in it will make you want to keep it.

If you do a search on this topic you can see some pictures (of sleds) showing the result of bypassing the TORS system... not pretty

thanks for the rapid responses. I will check into it further and order a switch if needed ASAP.

I'd be willing to bet the switch on the carb rack is dirty, this has been the spot that I've found to be the cause of most TORS problems. It can be taken off and cleaned, there's a write up in the tech section on how to do it,or you can just replace it with new.If you have an ohm meter you can check both switches to see which one is acting up,just unplug the wires and use the test leads to check each one individually by opening and closing each switch.

You could bypass it safely if you add a tether type kill switch (like the Skidoo's use).

Well this thread has convinced me to not run my sled w/ the switch bypassed. I have the TORS working fine on all my sleds except my 97 Vmax 4. I have spent the last year restoring it, and will only use for some pretty mellow cruzes so wasn’t that worried until now picturing the throttle sticking and wrecking my sled. Anyway I know my throttle free play is fine. Is the next step just to replace the switch on the carb rack? Thanks..

Good idea with the meter. I will try it and report back. Seeing it is a 99 I will order one anyways. Will have to wait until the weekend when I can look at it, but seeing we don't have snow yet not in that much of a hurry. If someone could convince the weather to snow not rain and hit us with a blizzard it would be much appreciated..... LOL

that works well if your religious about attaching the tether to yourself prior to pulling the rope, most dont. you have about as much chance of grabbing the tether as you do hitting the kill switch. You could bypass it safely if you add a tether type kill switch (like the Skidoo's use).
i use both- tether and tors. i like my sleds.
