is it worth putting a 136 into my Phazer or do you lose a lot of speed? I ride in the ditches a lot and have a pipe, flatslides, and vforce 3 reeds on it

its going to reduce the top speed some due to the increased track weight. It will certainly ride better id thats what your after.

I was actually thinking doing the same thing. Putting on a 141 on a 2 stroke Phazer

You shouldnt lose very much speed at all if your not using a bigger lug track. should be able to get a 2" lug in there no problem (assuming that this sled has 8t drivers). youd basically be turning it into a mountain lite or venture without the 2up seat. As far as if its worth it I personally dont think so unless you find some stuff for a good price. If not your looking at just shy of a $1000 job. Have you considered a more ditchbanger worthy skid to swap in to replace the "no-action"?, ditch the cobra and go with something with deeper lugs.

In stock condition those sleds can only pull the stock gearing in super optimum conditions (lightly snow covered smooth ice, downhill, dropped out of an airplane, etc.). Thus IMO they need to be geared down even in stock form. For a 136 I would gear down even more especially if you have a 1.5 or taller track. They produce enough power to be fun in the ditches when geared down, but the throttle response is quite slow so they behave more like previous generation sleds. The 2000 PZ500 came with 9 tooth drivers, so switching to 8 tooth drivers gives you an 11% reduction. I went even further on one of them and it is quite snappy given the slow response of that motor. Now if you could get significantly more power out of the motor it would change the whole picture. I think cooling becomes the problem though as you up the HP. They sure are light and fun. If only you could get 120 HP in them without adding any weight.

Any ideas on gearing in the first gen(looking) Phazers and the 2000ish gen Phazers.?

There were a ton of people that knew a lot more then I do about the pre-1999 Phazers. This little sled was at one time the all time top selling sled and was seen on many a race track. I suggest just doing some searching.
For the 1999-2001 Phazer there isn't a lot of info out there, so here is my advice . . .
Drop to 8 tooth drivers (I just used a stock driveshaft off a Mtn Max - this sled doesn't really need extros). I would do this regardless as it will allow the track to fit a little better. If you want more dedicated off-trail then consider dropping the top gear to a 19 or even and 18 (stock was 21). You should be able to keep the 39 bottom gear and 68 chain.
I will tell you that while the motor is very similar (just small upgrades), the overall sleds are quite different. The early Phazers can be excellent off-trail sleds, while the later gen really need more power to reach the same level.
