Can anyone tell me how to check for a bad stator? I'm having some issues with my Viper running badly and I was talking to a guy that has one and he said that his was doing the same a few years ago and it ended up being the stator. It's getting dropped off tomorrow to resolve whatever problem it has but if I could check this tonight.

Just had the same issue on my srx it was a little corrosion on the flywheel causing the pick up coil to get a bad reading. I cleaned it up and it is working great now.

So is it just a matter of taking it apart and checking? No diagnosing can be done?

As far as rust/corrosion on the flywheel you can look down in between the end of the cases and the recoil housing and see part of the flywheel. If it looks to be clean I would suspect it to be. If its got rust on it pull the recoil and get a better look. From what I remember about your other threads didn't your sled sit for a couple years. Plenty of time for rust to form. When I am putting sled away I give a lil snort of WD-40 or fogging oil threw that gap or the timing key hole deal on a SRX while slowly rolling motor over by hand. No reason to go crazy with it, just need a film on it.

No this sled did not sit as far as I know. I just bought it a month ago and don't really know the history but the guy told me he run it regularly as long as he owned it.

when the stator in my viper went bad it would randomly just start running bad. Really low power. Seemed like it would drop a cylinder, and then all of a sudden it would kick back in to full power. It eventually just stopped running completely. You are supposed to be able to check them with a ohm meter, but i have never had good luck with that.

I was havinf the same issues and just had my stator tested and replaced by the dealer ($260.00 canadian) and it has cleared up all the quirks I was having, runs great and no more electrical BS with th eguages anymore either.
