Hey, I've recently purchased some Vmax600 TMX's for my Phazer II. I need some help with trying to get in the ballpark of jetting, what people have used for intakes (sled didn't come with an airbox), and extended throttle cables, as I have an 8" riser.

Info in regards to jetting:
DG pipe (came on it, I know they aren't the best)
3400' above sea level
Intake will likely be open element filters mounted above the cowl
Correct clutching for the pipe

I had a piped, ported, Phazer II with 38 TM flat sildes, no rack, back in the day. About all I remember is I ran 340 mains. I don't remember anything more about the intake either besides the fact that I got the whole setup from PSI. Most pipes for that sled ran at about 7300rpm. I'm not sure about the DG.

with those carbs and the pipe my I would say 145 mains and drop the pilots to 47.5 depending on the year of the carbs if they have air screws set them at one turn if they have fuel screws set them at 1.5 turns needles and tubes should be good the way they are on my trail rider with the dg pipe 7200 seems to be the ticket

They may not have been exactly the same carbs. Mine were flat slide 38 TMs, but this was 1990. I knew someone else at the time that was running 370s with a similar setup. Air box was gutted with a cold air intake. It was also "Lake Racer" ported. These things could have had an effect. Mine came from PSI with 290s, but I had to go all the way up to 340s to stop burning pistons.

Yamaha Nutz info sound right. I had a previous "80s" Phazer that was piped only with stock carbs. It was jetted the same as he states except I had 147.5 mains. I am at about 700' above sea level so the 145s should easily be safe. Good luck. They can be a fun sled when piped.

yes the jetting was to get you close but I would also have a set of 147.5 main and a set of 148.8's too

yes the original tm flats (non rack style) use the large hex mains and regular pilots I have a set that I use to run on one of the race sleds ....you state 340 mains .....wow that is fat most in a good state of tune on the coldest day only want 280's last I has them on mine was with a rpc pipe and my engine work which for comparison makes psi cylinders look stock and I was at 240 mains and this was on a oval sled ......I think you had mid range tuning issues as they needed different tubs and a different needle in the mid range if not they would go boom

At that time I did not know a lot about jetting more than changing the mains & idle air adjustments. Mine came from PSI with 290s. I would burn pistons if I was wide open crossing lakes much more than about 1/2 a mile with any decent load. Ice was fine. Going up that far did help this quite a bit. Plugs still looked coffee to lighter brown in most rideable temps, I never had burn down problems in any other situation like constant mid throttle or short 1/4 mile runs even in deeper snow. I have always thought that after the large gain in HP, that comes so easily to the Phazers, it may be that the fan cooling was just not able the dissipate the additional heat from a prolonged run with the extra power. Sled was always fun. Beat up on a lot of fresh off the showroom floor, non-setup 650 Indys and Wildcats. Long runs for those bigger sleds or if they were set up properly then forget it. Short quick runs were the place to surprise people.

I know I'm a little off topic but it's hard not to pull back those good memories

heck mine still beat correctly set up sleds and not to mention most with a pipe and just a little bit of cylinder work and the correct heads can make a easy 75-80 hp .......I am working on a new cylinder design that I hop with the rest of the combo will make over 100hp constantly and safely

they are a blast and I love trail riding and racing them
