I have an 89 Phazer. I have the brakes all the way adjusted and she still doesn't stop well. I just got two new pads but they don't look like they have much more meat on them as the old ones. I have not installed them yet. Are there common problems with these? Is my brake cable stretched out?
Thank you,
Jason

Yamaha mechanical brakes just plain suck. Sometimes the rotor will seize on the jackshaft and cause very poor braking, however even with everything in proper working order, they still dont work for crap. The best and easiest solution is to put a polaris hydraulic set up on it.

Wow thanks! What year should I look for, I guess what's compatible? I am some what handy I clean my own carbs, gas lines filters have adjusted a polaris brake, on a polaris that is. Is is complicated? Thank again.

Its pretty simple. Yamaha nutz has a thread on how to do the polaris conversion. You need a Kelsey/Hayes caliper from a polaris, pre 1992. You can use the same year master cylinder or go with the a polaris or cat willdwood. I use the Arctic Cat Wilwood masters because the brake switch is on it and you can wire it in to the existing harness easily.
