I'm baffled. I have a 98 srx 600 and a 01 srx 2001.
I am trying to get a stock silencer on the 600. I had the silencer off of the 01 and tried to get it to fit the 600, but the tubes on the silencer were too long I guess because there was about an inch gap between the header pipes and the pipes. So today the silencer that was suppose to be off a 98 came and now the pipes are too short...now there is a gap where the silencer and pipes meet. There is no telling what the guys before me had put on these sleds. I do know that the 600 has 155 main jets, so that tells me that it might be a wolf in sheeps clothing (700 maybe?) And that the pipes off the 01 700 have the cone exhaust gaskets like the pipes on the 98, rather than the joint connections that the later model srxs have.
I put the bender can back on the 600 to see how it fit and it appears that the bender can had to be pulled forward of where it was designed to ride so that the pipes would reach it.
I guess I'm going to try to pinch the bender can innards a bit and repack it to stifle it a bit for now, but would like to get a stocker on it.
This is the 98 silencer on the 600.

Are your header pipe/flanges modified in any way, or the expansion chambers (pipes) themselves? You have two full sets so you can compare "side by side", especially since it sounds like you have 1998 expansion chambers on your 2001.
You have two stock silencers now, right? Compare those side by side and with a tape measure. If you are getting gaps that wide in different locations, something should jump out on the comparisons. Post up the pics, maybe with a tape measure in a critical location, someone may have some parts handy to measure for comparison. I wish I had a 98 silencer to compare.
Is your outlet hole in the bellypan in the same location on both sleds, did someone recut or move the hole around on one of them?

98 and 2001 srx doesn't have the same parts number for the muffler so it must have something different..pipe are all the same from 99 to 2002..not sure what is the difference for the muffler

98 exhaust is different than the other years. I think, 99 on up had the adjustable ends on the pipes and the 98's didn't.

I have a 98 600 completely stock as far as I know, a 99 700 with bender can (stock pipes as far as I know) a 00 700 all stock exhaust. Have you looked at the side of the jugs? Should have displacement on the side, maybe they took pipes and can off another year (6or7) to put on your 98 600? If I can measure anything to help you figure it out I will.
all pipe are all the same only 98 have different one ...I didn't look for the headers
It would seem that there are only two combinations of stock, unmodified parts that should fit together properly, based on Yamaha's part numbers.
1) All 1998 SRX exhaust systems are the same, whether 600 or 700.
2) All 1999-2000 SRX exhaust systems use the same header flanges and pipes. For some reason some of the silencers have different part numbers among these years, but if the flanges and pipes are all the same, then the pipe outlets are all in the exact same location for 1999-2002. I don't think Yamaha moved the outet hole in the bellypan on any of the SRX's, can someone confirm?
Also, the header flange numbers are the same for all SRX's 1998-2002, 600 and 700.
Therefore, it would seem that if the (stock) exhaust components are unmodified, and the sled chassis is straight, with the engine in the proper location, then exhaust sets as described above should interchange fit-wise in the chassis (barring an outlet hole change). Adding in aftermarket cans may complicate this a bit, but it still seems that worse case there could be stock replacement cans that physically fit 1998 chassis, and then cans that physically fit 1999-2002 chassis.

As far as the pipes themselves go I believe they are they the same length, the difference in part numbers would account for the adjustable flanges on the 99 and up vs the welded on ones from the 98's.
Guys, I am sorry for wasting your time...I worked on the bender can, re packed it, pinched off the three screen tubes and it was still too loud...not trying to get a ticket this weekend...
The bender can wasnt going to cut it so I put the stocker back in and it fits fine....I don't know what the heck I did wrong the first time...but all is good now.
FWIW....the bender can worked with the 98 pipes, but it had to be pulled forward and the flange that rests on the belly pan did not sit flat, so that tells me that the 98 pipes are shorter than other years.
Thanks for all the replies, and again, sorry for wasting your time!
