Hi all new to this site.Seems like the place to be for a Yamaha guy. I just picked up an 02 viper with 3200 miles. Seems to run great. Was wondering about servicing the power valves. Guy I got it from was second owner. I asked about cleaning the power valves and he said he's never done it. Seems like I saw a post that said it needs doing every 7 or 800 miles. Is this something I should worry over? Also the suspesion is way too stiff for me. It is set at max firm. There doesn't seem to be a tool in the tool kit for this adjustment. Unusual for Yamaha I thought. The owners manual says take it to the dealer. This isn't something I should need a tech for. Where can I get my hands on the wrench you need for this adjustment? Any tips on backing the suspension off would be great. My phazer rides better than this thing right now. Thanks Gary .

As far as the power valves it really depends on oil used and how its riden. I have heard 7-800 miles as you have heard but have also heard 2500-3000. I run amsoil interceptor and swap(spare sets for SRX700) out or clean annually as pre-season maintance and then don't worry about it all season. Any one of my sleds will be extremely lucky to see the 7-800 as I have 3-4 sleds I ride. BETHEVIPER has some great how to's on his signature for Skid set up, ski's etc as well as theres a pro action video floating around that explains a lot.

Moved this to the proper forum for you. As Devil said check the Suspension write-ups in Bethevipers signature http://www.totallyamaha.net/forums/member.php?3396-BETHEVIPER. I'd definitely clean and adjust the powervalves if the previous owner never did it. There are plenty of write-ups here just do a search. I wouldn't be surprised if you have some pull-thrus. If he never did the powervalves odds are he never did the carbs or clutches either. All these need annual cleaning and inspection.

I purchased the tools from Pioneer performance: http://pioneerperformance.net/store/page13.html
They also revalved my front and rear shocks and they now work GREAT.

Thanks guys new I'd find answers here. Getting ready for a trip and doing an annual on the whole sled has been on my mind . It is also the hardest starting sled I've ever had. Extremely cold blooded.

you know the choke has 2 spots right??, you have to bend the lever over almost backwards for a cold start. They start pretty easy if the choke is adjusted right.
Yup he showed me the choke thing. pulling carbs in the morning. Also its been on yamalube all its life.

What rpm does it idle at? 1800 is the stock setting and it will probably start harder if it's set lower.
Well got the choke sorted out. Starts nice now . Found a generic spanner for the rear shock got it set between standard and soft for now. Power valve cables seem OK wanna che h adjustment on them. Get up and do the valves and check clutchs tomorrow. Primary has a spring with a yellow and white dot on it.
