Been struggling with this sled for 3 yrs. Until this year at least, it would start well but would quit after it warmed up. Sometimes it would restart and run OK after that, sometimes not. Now, it barely starts and seems to flood after a warmup and wont restart. New gas, carb cleaned, enrichener plunger checked and adjusted, checked for mouse nests (had that problem before). Plugs were dark and wet. Today I replaced plugs and caps. I checked for hot spark before trying to start. Mag side is hot and blue but PTO side looks very weak. I pulled off the coil and looked it over, made sure it was making good ground.
I read a lot of old posts on the suject but I have 2 questions. The coil only has 1 wire coming from the CDI so it seems like it wouldnt spark on either if CDI was bad. Can half the coil be bad? The wire could be bad, can the wires be removed from the coil and replaced? I haven't checked stator yet. Trying easy stuff first.

Do the plug wires unscrew from the coil the way the caps do? I dont want to destroy the coil if I dont have to.

How did you ground the coil? I'd like to try that and see if that helps my situation out.

I just unscrewed it from its mounting location on the motor and made sure the screws and holes were clean and the coil was making good contact to the case when the screws were tightened back down.

Sunday I will probably pull the motor to check resistance on everything else, I'll let you know what I find out. For now I am going to try and wire a ground straight from the coil and see what that does.

Had some family over today and they wanted to ride around the yard, so I threw the coil back in and it ran decent. first five minutes was great, both cylinders firing everywhere, but the more i rode, the pto side started to shut down unless i was over 3/4th's throttle. Rode a tad bit more and the mag side started to sputter. pto plug was chocolate colored, mag was perfect.

Starting to think about parting mine out. I got the SRX up and running good tho. Makes me wonder why i'm messing about with the tired old iron.

no the wires do not come out to the coil ....if they do the coil is junk and yes you can have half a coil go bad all phazer srv and ss440 coils will work

Thanks YN. Gonna go see if the salvage has a coil.

Fixed, I think
I took all wiring apart and cleaned and reseated connectors. I cleaned and tightened the frame ground wire at the voltage regulator. Ohmed out the stator, seemed ok. Hi-potted the coil, no leakage to ground. I removed and reinstalled new plug caps. Since I had the carb out I recleaned it and found the needle stuck. When I took the float off i found the seat was jammed full of debris, little bits of grit. I cleaned all passages again and reinstalled. I figured that stuff had to come from somewhere since it was in the fuel input passage so I took apart the fuel pump and found this. I cleaned it out. She runs good now. I probably should drain the tank and clean it out and replace the fuel filter too. I guess the spark was hot enough.

picture has too much glare to see but it looks to me like the fuel filter in the tank is coming apart so change that and install a inline filter before the pump just to be safe
