Well my battle with my 95 dx continues. To make a long story short. I need a topend kit. Any recommendations? Lots of choices on google. How critical is the manufacturer on the gaskets ? I could afford to get the rings from yamaha if I can find them.

I like using www.portyamaha.com or www.waldochsports.com
OEM Yamaha, factory quality, factory dimensions, and they are often reusable if in good shape. Otherwise in addition to the two choices above, try yamahapartsnation.com or may be able to find a wrecked or otherwise damaged 94-96 Vmax with a good running engine for cheap.

What qualifies them to be reusable? As long as they aren't torn?

Most metal gaskets can be reused as long as they aren't bent or damaged upon removal. The metal gaskets don't compress so it's no different than when it was put on in the first place. Clean it up good, and put a light coat of copper spray on it. The exception would be the ones with the raised rings that compress like the exhaust manifolds but I've reused those with copper spray too. But if you can't sleep at night with that, by all means, buy new ones.

Ok cool, well, I'll start disassembling today and see what we have. Are the base gaskets and head gaskets both metal?
