What chain width does the sx chassis sleds run? I got another copy of my invoice from
the dealer today. They put in a 70l 13 wide chain. Well for my mountain max I have a hunch it has trail gearing in it from the previous owner. I have a NOS 19t and 20t top gear, going to put in the 20T top gear. I called a reputable dealer, service and salvage house to order a 68l chain. I gave the woman the oem number and she said they didn't have the oem chain but offer me an aftermarket. She said the book for the aftermarket chain lists it as an 11 plate chain? What's right?

I do have a reverse kit, and the oem chain lists as the same for both normal and reverse as well as about 200 other applications for different year models.

Should i call the dealer tomorrow and just ask them to double check the chain? I don't feel like having it show up and have to return it and wait for another one. I know it won't ship till Monday.

Let's Play WTF, Over?

Thanks. That's what I thought. I will be calling first thing to make sure it's changed before it goes out on Monday. Got to love a parts counter that's open 7 days a week in the winter. When the woman couldn't cross reference the Yamaha p/n I told her it was for a mountain max and she asked me what size and I said 700. I never told her the year, maybe she thought it was for a vMax pogo chassis mountain max?

Update: I got home today and decided to drop the oil and pull the chain case apart to have all my ducks in a row when I call about the chain on monday. I drained the oil, got it into a clear container so I can reuse it and tore it all down. It was not as scary popping my chain case cherry as I thought. Only little hang up was I didn't pull the little bolt that hold the end of the reverse gear shaft right away. Once I got that out it the cover popped off no problem. Then it got interesting

First off, you can't pull the chain without pulling the reverse gear, so I pulled off the gear, and you have to pull the chain with the reverse counter gear at the same time. Slide it off the shaft until you can take the chain off. Here's where the WTF starts happening. It has a 21 top gear and the 39 bottom gear with a 70 link chain. The slack adjuster was almost bottomed out even with this new chain. I was on the break point for a 68L chain but I really will be with a 20 top gear. Here's what has me pissed through the slack adjuster roller is SEIZED to the shaft. What good is a $900 track swap that included checking out the chain case when a part that has to be held in your hand is put back in like that! That explains why there have been metal shavings all over the dipstick the few times I have pulled it this fall. The sled has not been ridden either, other than a few laps around the yard and in to and out of the truck to move it over to my place Friday.

So now I hope I can press apart the old roller without damaging the casting, get a roller and shaft and get my chain order squared away. Hoping I can get everything in hand by the end of the week, it would be nice.

I got a little done today. The chain case is starting to go back together. I installed the 20T top gear and the bearing for the chain tensioner showed up in the mail today. I'm still waiting on the chain ,idler roller and pin to show up in the mail. Got my fingers crossed I see them on Friday and can start putting everything back together.

You'll be chompin at the bit till Friday!!!

I don't know if I would get to do anything with it until Monday headed to VT sans sled for the weekend. Might get a trip Monday before heading back to work for another 14 days on Wednesday. I still haven't seen a charge from Hauck for my clutch springs. I haven't been able to find any info on it, but I'm leaning towards filing down the stops on the helix ramps while it's out. I'm guessing that it can't go too far and push the belt out the primary can it?

I had read that the seals go towards the oil so it can leak in to lubricate things but keeps the metal out. I guess given time the oil can get past the seal when things are submerged. Given the rpm in the chain case, there is no doubt oil is flying everywhere off the chain.
