I have two 1997 Vmax 600 XTC sleds. Last year I discoverred one of them was basically pumping fuel out of the two vent lines on the twin carbs into the belly pan. I clean theb carbs annually but since it was days before a trip north w/ the sleds I took the carb to the dealer where they told me it was a float issue and proceeded to charge me $300 to go through the carbs. I re-installed the day before my trip only to find the fuel was still coming out of the vent lines and into the belly.....I tried removing the zip ties and pointing the lines UP instead of DOWN and the problem went away. Went on the trip only to find the sled used a huge aqmount of fuel compared to the other identcal one. It ran great at idle and high speed but I worried from town to town if I would make it. Oil consumption seemed to be in tune with fuels consumption. At times it seemed like some unspent fuel was blowing through the exhaust. I'm stumped!! Anyone ever had this sort of thing happen??? Any ideas much apreciated since the dealer repair took me for $300 bucks for nothing.....
Remove the floats, inlet needles, and inlet seats.
Check the inlet needle tip to make sure it is still in good condition and not broken or torn at all, and that it fits nicely into the inlet seat.
Check the little o-ring around the outside of the inlet seat, these tend to harden up and not seal after all these years.
Also check the tophat screen filter that is clipped onto the top of the seat and make sure it's not starting to plug up (yet still flow of course).
Verify your floats are adjusted properly during reassembly. Actually, check them before disassembly as well in case they are out of adj.

Yep sounds like it's still a float/needle problem. Sounds like you took it to the stealer instead of the dealer.

Is fuel coming out of BOTH carbs. Also, is the bill itemized as far as parts go?

Pretty sure it was coming from both carbs. Its been a year since I turned the lines to point up and not leak so i will need to turn em back down to double check. I havent been able to find the receipt from the service. As I recall it was needle seats and float with some line item for adjustments to what they called factory settings. I may end up going back to the daeler and explaining my dissapointment and at a minimum asking for a new copy of what they did for the three hundred bucks......Thanks!
