Hello Yamaha Lovers,
I have a 85 440 that I just put new fuel lines on, along with a fuel filter and carb clean. seems to not be getting fuel from the pump to the carb. if I hook a vacuum pump to the port that goes to the engine i get gas to the carb then it will start. When it does run it doesnt want to idle worth a damn. Could I have a bad float needle? Bad pump possibly? any input would be great. lots of snow coming, need my toy to play in it with :-)

have you checked the pulse line that goes from the engine to the fuel pump, as if they get a split in them they wont work to good, or just replace it.

I had just thought about that. I have new line for that too but it looks like i would have to remove the motor almost to get to it. any sugesstions?

sounds like you have a bad pump that bleeds back kind of common with these pumps .....bad idle could be bad cranks seals as fter all these years I would be replacing them to be safe

Well I replaced the pulse line and still nothing. no gas coming from the tank even. Now on the fuel pump issue. I know some of these sleds have a small rectangular pump or a circular pump. I have the circular one right now. which is more reliable?

always hate to suggest crank seals ???? dirty way to test is spray some starting aid in the recoil hole and see if it
increases in RPM . Try pto side as well... Do it outside , extinguisher around ... and on a jack stand as it could engage
clutch and wonder off.
Also gives you bad idle ... etc
good luck

All else fails i'll put a SRV motor in the damn thing. I don't doubt that the seals are bad. I've ridden this thing for three years with the idle issue. oh well. little TLC never hurt!

I use a VK540 for setting ski track . 3 yrs and about 50 miles later I decided to pull out a plug
one sat morning and it was full of almn. Ran great , didn't idle well. I should have known to check it when
it was purchased ... the rubber bung on pto end for the injection wasn't even in the sled. Seal had been blown off
crank and the Mag side was melted. Someone had either started it and left a bit of a crankcase fire in it.
Piston had packed the skirts into the ports , pin worn into cyl wall, and crank full of filings ....
There is a good reason they run them in the arctic areas ... it just wouldn't quit...
I rebuilt it with partial remains of a SRV540? engine and it performs well now.

No carnage yet (knock on wood) think i'm going to get a new pump and just run with it to finish out winter. then rebuild this summer, maybe hook up some nitrous (i am just kidding)

Still which pump should I get? I am trying to shy away from paying 140 for a new pump from the dealer. I see shadetree sells a square pump for single carb but not a circular singe carb pump. Would the sqaure looking one work?

Problem is knowing the volume of the diff pumps. Lawn tractor pump should work but may
not deliver as much fuel as needed when wide open, Shape has more to due with manufacturing
techniques ... Kawasaki lawn tractor engines have used both shapes over the years and lately
Deere has used the Briggs , round plastic as a replacement on newer 20hp models.
