I seem to recall that happening to Sideshowbob more than once. What i don't recall is if he ever figured out the cause or not. maybe wasn't even him at all but worth a PM

I think I remember slideshowbob posting about that, he said he had some stainless valves made for his SRX.
wish he could made some for me .....im tired getting tow home because of them
any idea who could do any stainless valve for srx

mod I really think it is time to scrub these old SRX's of ours already..to much maintenance with these stupid valves..and money as well.
My SXR does not cost me hardly anything in maintenance as the SRX does..maybe time to put these old dogs to pasture ..thinking of selling mine again and just keep my SXR600..

I will put plug there and stick them open

On my 2002 SRX I broke three valves over the past few years and had the blades fall in the cylinder. This happened even to a fairly new valve.
I was getting to the point of getting plugs built to replace the valves, clutch it like a ported Red Head 700 and just elliminate the power valves all together. A machinest friend hand built me 3 stainless steel power valves for me, not unlike what Polaris and Cat have done on some of their engines because of similar issues.
Hopefully the SS valves will elliminate the problem...ti me will tell!

Would you still get decent power out of them if you replaced the valve with a plug?

I would replace the cylinder because the tabs that keep the valve from dropping into the cylinders must be broken. I have to think that many power valves that actually break are because the stop tabs are gone. The stop tabs can wear off if a valve is allowed to "ride" against them because of a broken cable, valve pull-thru, or cable too loose.
If your valve broke off then contact with the piston is likely. The stop tabs (if in good shape) should never allow the valve to touch the piston.
Now if you are over bored (not overboard - lol) all bets are off. Care would have to be taken to ensure the stop tabs are still functional.

You will lose low-end power due to the "fixed" exhaust port height. You could make a plug that dropped the port height (attach a valve to the plug) which would restore low-end / mid-range power, but then top end would be lost.
I did see a motor that was converted to a RAVE style valve (no cables), but never understood the perceived advantage.
