Hi everyone,
Can you give me some information about the cold air block off kit that Yamaha developed for the VMAX sleds? What was/is the intended purpose...besides the obvious of "blocking cold air"?
When should the kit be used? Is it safe to install the kit, and leave it on permanently? Do I run the risk of overheating the sled with the kit installed? Does the kit work well?
Thank you,
Zack

the purpose was to reduce if not eliminate snow entering the airbox from around the headlight area or the fresh air intake during extreme cold temps or powdery snow conditions.
the kit consisted of a taller piece of foam between the headlight cover and the fairing along with an improved foam seal atop the airbox. also included in the kit were block-off plates for behind the nosecone as well as the vents on the hood.
the kit should be used in extreme cold temps. the foam pieces can be left in regardless of temp or snow, the block-offs would be only used in extreme temps and you would want to remove them based on your own judgement. no set specs or given temps, just good reasoning.
the basis behind the kit and its design was to reduce the chances if the carbs ingesting snowdust and icing of the carbs. doubt you can even find one anymore, but you cold duplicate the foam.

Ok I have the kit, but in the original Yamaha kit that I have it is just the three plastic block off plates with screws. There is no foam at all in the kit and there is no mention of foam in the directions. Was the foam a different part number ?
Thanks,
Zack

the foam was optional, but recommended by yamaha to battle snow ingestion along with the blockoff plates. same foam pieces used on the 95 and 96 models.
part # 8AB-77268-00-00 for the console and 8AB-14425-01-00 for the airbox.
