Hey all,

been having the itch for a srx for some time now and I recently found a nice 02 srx locally with 9100km with a blown motor...
got it for a decent price and I really wanted a new project sled... :)

The Pros:

- Chassis is straight and all plastics are in great shape...not 1 white mark on the bellypan!!
- new arrow skis and carbides , gonna swap for c&a adx's I think
- new 1.25 ripsaw and new anti ratchet drivers, and hyfax
- bender transfer rods
- v force reeds
- MBRP Silencer

what it needs

- find a white skidplate, paint grills white, and black headlight decal
- install c&a skis and oem Yamaha tunnel braces
- find a shop that can do oem style graphics...its missing the right side trailing arm decal...
- going to remove front suspension and powdercoat it all black this summer (new decals again! lol)
- full engine, it has a seized connecting rod, 2 bad cylinders and heads.(luckily i found a very nice 00 srx motor on ebay that's on the way)
- full detail job
- sandblast pipes and heat shields and powercoat shields chrome, all new grafoil exhaust donuts
- clean carbs and set it up to 01 specs
- use turks clutching setup 4.5 grams in both holes, yel-sil-yel primary spring, 51/43 helix with green sec spring wrapped at 70 with a new belt
- the hood is missing a piece by the left latch, so going to repair with a snowmobile hood repair kit and fiberglass...
- theres something broken in the front arm of the rear suspention...its sitting on the bump stops on the front arm...
- new drive chain and gears for piece of mind (stock gearing best?)
- all bearings and seals replaced on chassis

hopefully in the next week or 2 I will get time to start this project!

cant wait to have a kick *** SRX on the snow! cant wait to here that signature SRX growl!!!

also guys where is the best place to get oem Yamaha parts? (am in Canada but will buy from the states if the deal is that good!)
also if you feel I should add something please let me know!

Cool project! I am also from Canada, I use partspitstop.com. The shipping will be expensive, but if you are buying for a big amount, it is worth it!

I am also in Canada and just recently rebuilt my 2002 SRX. I purchased all my parts through Cycle Parts Warehouse out of Texas. Great guys to deal with and you will save huge when you order many parts. I just recently ordered the trailing arm and tunnel graphics. The trailing arm graphics are cheap. Not worth the trouble of having them made up. Good luck.

Try ronniesmailorder.com
They just shipped an order to me in Ontario and their online microfiche has the prices beside the part number. Just get your parts list and call them.
Good luck!I have wanted to try those arrow skis. If you drive it let us know how they are.

Thanks Chris,

One of my friends just told me about Ronnie's mail order so I'll be definatly going that way!
Ahhhh the arrow skis probally won't ever see snow as I have a set of C&A's en route!
Loved them so much on my vipers

And about the oem decals, when I went to my dealer he said they were all discontinued....
so hopefully Ronnie's has them!

Thanks for all the help!

Also guys what's best for gearing?
This is going to be a trail sled that's going to battle with apex's and new 800cc iron!
Would love to be able to set it up to burry the needle on 200 km/h :)

May not be possible with the 1.25" track?

I buy up whatever I can find in used srx's for parts and should the time come that I need the parts I have them unless it's internal parts like pistons/rings or bearings then it's new from the dealer. These sleds aren't cheap to fix and ya the dealer is pricey but I find ya get what ya pay for. Last one I bought was a 99 700 srx had 3000 km's on it and I got it for $500 needed a track. Usually find them with blown motors all cause they guy never cleaned the carbs before the season. No matter how I put sled away in the spring I always have carbs cleaned in the fall and I also drain and change the fuel. My srx has 22000 km's on it and has never had the motor done. This year I replaced the stator and carbs but other than that this sled has never let me down . I run Egt gauges use premium fuel and synthetic oil. Compression check this yr all 3 had 125psi and make no mistake I ride this sled like I stole it. Maintenance is the key and keep those carbs clean. This is just what I do and it works for me and it's just my opinion. Enjoy your srx they are truly awesome sleds.

Thanks for all the feedback guys!

For a trail/lake race setup would stock gearing be best?
I want to be able to bury that needle!

just ordered my oem parts list from ronnies today, that had all the decals that my dealer said were discontinued!

I went with 01 trailing arm decals and tunnel decals...like those better then the 02 style
also added the 01's Powervalve decals...

so with all the parts enroute its a waiting game now, hopefully I can get some time this week to start tearing it down and do all the cleanup so that its ready to go when all the parts show up!

thanks shaggy!

I just ordered a black rsr skidplate from royal distributing, along with the rest of my order...will paint it white with krylon plastic paint if the black dosent suit it!
seen a few oem Yamaha ones on ebay but the shipping to me up here will kill the deal...

As for your gearing question...

I'm running 1 tooth bigger on the top gear. It sounds like alot and I think 98-99 were geared alittle taller from the factory to start with. But it worked great for me, from holeshot to topend. I used to ride with all SRX's and a piped 700 SX, and that's all we'd do is mod-race-mod-race to find out what works.

These were races in fields and lakes where there is some spin from the start, maybe that's why gearing taller helped the holeshot, I don't know. But any of our sleds that geared up took a stock geared sled by 2-3 lengths right from the start. Those that geared down were very disappointed.

And to this day I'm having very good luck against the modern big dog sleds. Not the big big dog turbo stuff, but Apexs, 800s from Po,AC, and Doo. All very close races but the look on their faces as we reach top end and my sled with close to 15000 miles keeps pulling. It's a very good feeling.

haha that's what im going for as well! and that shows Yamaha quality and good maintance goes a long way!

ive had a boosted apex...and while it is fun...it didn't have the soul of fun factor of an SRX...plus the costs were outrageous!
I spent more on a few parts then on this whole SRX project...ahh the good single days lol

was going to go with a bit taller gearing but figured I should leave it alone as it has transfer rods and a 1.25" track...should hook

Yeah, you should have a problem hooking up with those. And I don't know how much a 1 1/4" track will hurt top end. You may just want to wait till she's running good then mark the clutches to see if it will pull more gear.

Lol on your single life comment, those were some good times. Even marriage was a blast as my wive was also into being the first across the lake. It was the 4 kids that sucked the life right out of my wallet.

Good call, am sure it won't be perfectly set up on the first run but am hoping for that!

Lucky man to have a woman that's into that! Mine gives me time in the evening to work and let's me ride for a day every second weekend so am doing pretty good for a guy with a 5 year old and another boy on the way this April!!

Hense an SRX project not a new Mcx turbo SR viper!! Lol

my sxr came with a 22tooth top and 39tooth bottom gear, for a 1.77 gear ratio. that pulls pretty good off the line all the way to the top of the speedo. i just changed to a 22 top and 38 bottom, 1.73 gear ratio, but its untested cause of rain. i am hoping for a little less spin off the line. i also ride with modern big boys and have no trouble keeping up.

Just wanted to post a update guys

I received my engine from the states and everything looked awesome, am waiting for my Ronnie's order to come in so I can pull the top end off for inspection...

I've found a like new 01 hood that I'm installing so I don't have to repair my damaged 02 hood now! I've learned that the seat from my sled is from a mountain max...so I went on the hunt for a Srx seat and found one that needs repairs and it's in the process of being repaired!

I've gotten another w arm, front track shock here as we'll to replace my damaged one...and I received my royal distributing order, c&a adx skis, skid plate, clutch puller and alignment tool, new pull chord rope, oil filter and fuel and oil line!

Am just waiting for my Ronnie's order which was decals, exhaust springs, donuts, top end gaskets, clutching parts, 2 new belts, plugs, thermostat, water rail and thermostat gaskets

Am still busy trying to finish my garage build, and I'm hoping the garage is completed by next week and setup, so then I can start the project as soon as the Ronnie's parts arrive!

Will be taking pictures of every step and am shooting for a week of working evenings for the build...gonna be sweet!

They are too rare around here to do that! Most have 20000 plus km or are wrecked...so with only 9000 on the chassis and it was very clean minus the hood...had to rebuild it! :)

Plus if I bought a used one I wouldn't really know what I'm getting, this way I know it's going to be a solid sled and set up correctly!
