Pics added to Waconia MN Vintage Sled Event-Yamaha Featured Sled Brand this year

I can't believe that there hasn't been any buzz on TY yet about next weekend's (Jan. 24-26) vintage event at Waconia. This year Yamaha and Yamaha powered sleds are the featured brand.

Any TY members planning on attending?

Here's a link to the event: http://www.mwvss.com/events/

I just noticed on the Waconia web site that Yamaha is going to be at the event with some of the 2014 sleds offering demo rides.

They will also have some of the racers from Yamaha's glory days of oval racing such as Mike and Lynn Trapp, Ed Schubitzke, Franz Rosenquist, Bobby Donahue, and some corporate people of past and present there.

Should be a great event for Yamaha fans.

Here's some pics of the event. I was in awe of all of the Yamaha sleds that were on display. It was great to see this one.....one of only three hundred made of the first Yamaha sled sold in the US. A 1968 SL350. They've come a long way since then.

Here's some pics of the 1971 SR433 that Mike Trapp drove to win the 1971 World's Championship at Eagle River. That was the first big win for Yamaha that really propelled them to a contender in oval racing in the '70's. Mike beat Yvon Duhamel from the Ski Doo factory team that was racing a 800cc sled. A true David vs. Goliath win for Yamaha, boogie wheel suspension and all.

Some pics of the rarest of the rare Yamaha racers. The 1974 Sno Pro SRX 440. Only 6 were made. The minimum race weight for a Sno Pro sled back then was 250lbs. These first came in at 232lbs. so they actually had to add weight to the sleds to make the weight requirement. The engine was solid magnesium, even the nuts and bolts. Lots of unobtanium on this sled. Yamaha won 7 of the 13 races that year in the 440 Sno Pro class and all but one loss was due to something breaking on the machine. When they held together they won.

Here's a row of some SRX's from the 1976-1977 era. 1976 was the first year of a consumer available SRX racer in both 340 and 440. The following year only the 440 was available and many consider that the most sought after SRX stock racer. After 1977 Yamaha turned the SRX into more of a consumer trail sled instead of the dedicated racer that it started out as.

This row had a few Canadian SRX's that had different graphics than the US versions. It also had a pre-production 1977 SRX. Those with knowledge of the '77 SRX should spot some differences on the pre-production version vs. the production version next to it.
