These are my first two snowmachines, I changed the belts on both last week and with the new belt on, both machines squeal at or near idle. Is that normal until they are broke in? the arrows on the belts are pointed towards the front of the machine...

See my post on the next page- clutch/ belt
Sounds like the exact same issue

It didn't squeal before, but it does w/ the new one? I've had to scrub new belts w/ scotchbrite to stop the squalling. Obviously scrub just the clutch/belt mating surface. And the surface of the clutches w/ 320 grit(somewhere @ there) or scotchbrite w/ hot soapy water.

My Vmax squealed when I got it (with an old belt on it). I scrubbed the sides of the belt with soapy water/scotchbrite and I also realigned the clutches using the proper tool. No more squeal. I would check the clutch alignment, mine was either off from the factory or the engine moved over time.

They did not squeal with the old belt, but I tried to run the sled at -40 and it would not turn the track and cooked the belt. I replaced the belt but now it squeals.

belts short... add a shim behind secondary to get the belt to drop in a bit.

You mean install thinner shims, right? If he just adds shims the problem will get worse.
Eaglejason, Yamaha sells 1.0mm shims and 0.5mm shims. Try going down half a mm from what you have now, but it would be prudent to first check the clutch alignment imo.

the VMax had 2 0.5 mm shims, removing 1 seemed to resolve the issue. The SX is down waiting for parts to be shipped in, but has 4 shims on it. I'll pull one once i have the other parts and am working on it. Thank you so much for your help.
