I have some vintage 13 spline bottom gears that are gold anodized and very light, they weigh less than the same gear in aluminum.
Are they magnesium?
I have been told they were magnesium and Yamaha anodized them so they would look different from the aluminum.

Entirely possible. It's usually anodized gold as well.
Magnesium was used on quite a few more things back in the day and is very light, but pretty brittle. If memory serves, in the 70s the dirt bike aftermarket folks were making anything they could out of magnesium to save weight. Up to, and including sprockets.
