How much better is the single GYT pipe over a stocker. 96 Vmax XT

I had one on my 94 600, and my buddy had the same sled with stock pipe, I rode both sleds and didn't really notice much of a difference between the two.
I'm almost positive the 96' is technically the "gyt" pipe. My dad had a 95 vmax and I remember him getting a 96 stock/gyt as an upgrade. It's basically just bigger in diameter, the head pipe is larger aswell. He said he noticed a difference, but I couldn't really tell. He also had a prototype pipe, which...I think... was by made by the maker of heelclicker clutches, that was the cats pajamas, until the crossover tube snapped. Then the "gyt" went on.

96 600 has better exhaust but not same as GYT a pipes. I think that performance would depend on getting the jetting and clutching updated. If you just put a set if GYT pipes on and don't get the getting and clutching updated there is not going to be a performance difference.

I had one on a '94 years ago. It worked nicely. Not a huge difference. Dyno tests showed about a 2-3 hp difference as I recall at a slightly higher rpm. The stock '96 pipe is very similar if not identical.

Does anyone remember if the skid shocks are rebuildable?

I have the 96 XT brochure that said it was fitted with the GYT pipe.
I know the 95 had non rebuildable kybs in the skid. Not sure on the 96xt as that one has more travel, could be a different shock.

If I recall correctly, all of the 1996 Vmax 600 models came with the GYT single pipe, and the Vmax 500's still had the smaller pipe.

Thanks guys!! I also was told that they don't like dual pipes as the jetting is very finicky. I'm not sure if that was a blanket statement about all dual pipes. Or mabey a particular pipe.

One more quick question. If I were to look for skis, am I looking for saddles, saddleless etc etc. Would like to ditch the steeles and get something with more floatation.
the 96 shocks are rebuilable. those motors love duel pipes ,at least my 94 did, and jetting , never had to rejet with psi's ,the stock jetting was fat ,anyways!

You need plastic skis that have saddles for that sled... USI skis were popular for those sleds and are still available new, but you can put many different skis on them by modifying the saddles. Lots of threads on this. ex http://www.totallyamaha.com/snowmobiles/aaTECH/ausertech/Dave_vmaxSkisrx1.htm

Don't think you could pay me enough to drop my twin pipes of my XT. not the best for some trail conditions but theres something about the pull from 35mph to 72 that is amazing I have a a couple thousand on my sled since the last rebuild and runs great as long as you set them up right they can still be reliable, heck I get 1-2mpg better than my dads 94 with the GYT single pipe.
Also the KYB shocks on the 96XT Skid are rebuildable. Many ski's work there are quite a few articles on here regarding that, I put some skidoo skis on mine probably the best upgrade I ever did, sled handles much better in powder. I just made some spacers and bolted them on.

I am sold on USI skis and don't have a single bad thing to say about all of them that I have had. Would like to somehow put some Triple Threats on this one.USI skis were popular for those sleds and are still available new

I have a friend with a 94 vmax 600 and he has a gyt single pipe he wants to put on it, will stock jetting be ok or would it have to be re-jetted?

Would have to read the plugs and wash to be certain. But as usual, stock jetting is fat. Should be just fine.
