If my stock gearing is 21/39 why won't a 22 top sprocket fit using the stock 68 link chain? I have a lot of slack available in the 68 link chain.

there is some combos' you can sneak in there, youll have to carefully align the splines up and you get it started on both shafts, and it will slip on using the shorter chain. I cant remember all of the differnt ones but theres for sure some will fit.

The break point for a 68l chain is 60 teeth total. At 61 teeth you need the 70l chain.
I just changed to 20/39 gearing and I had to put on the top gear with the bottom gear hanging in the loop. I have reverse, but there wasn't much left for slack putting it on.

If you do get it started like this, there will be almost NO slack.get it started on both shafts

yep, exactly.
reverse is differnt because of the idler gear.
I dont remember the combo's you can do but it is possible on some to use the shorter chain. the factory tensioner will become just about a idler just needing to touch the chain is all.

I ask because I just purchased a clutch kit and they recommended a larger top sprocket. I'm not lake racing so I'll try it it as-is. I do have reverse.

I run 21/40 gears with a 68 link chain.
You have to slip on both gears a exactly the same time.
The chain will be tight doing this, but I do not need the chain tensioner with this gear chain combo.
This is on a 1997 vmax 700 sx.

With the little bend in the up traveling side of the chain around the reverse idler gear I bet it won't fit. Let us know!
