When riding and I heard a noise like a broken belt or a ripped stud. I found a chunk of twisted metal under the secondery. Speedometer stopped working. What do you think happened?

99% of the time for me it was the drive bearing like what was said before. Simply take the secondary clutch off and remove the three nuts on the speedo housing right below it. take that off and you should have your answer. the other 1% is that the cable simply came off the speedometer, happened to me already this year. but from the sound of it its a drive bearing.

Well i took it apart today and the bearing looks good. It looks like the key is the problem. I don't know what the twisted metal piece is. I found a number on it. R16toj. I goggled it and nothing came up. I took pic's of everything. I think the problem is the key. I might have lucked out. The sled runs fine.

The bearing looks shot to me if you remove the outer rubber seal with a pick tool it is probably full of rust. The shinny part at the end of the shaft has been rubbing on the cover that's why the speedo shaft broke the bearing has moved at a bump in the trail.

X2 - it appears the shaft seal gap is larger on the unloaded (left) side too. Loosen the track and you'll find it wobbling.
You did get lucky but you'll be a little busier now.
Seems I've seen the shranel before but can't place it. Can you add some scale and the other pieces?

... Here is a pic of the thing I found under the secondary View attachment 54167.
That could be one of the center sliding bushings from one of your clutches that worked it's way out and got caught up inside the clutch for awhile before finally getting spit out. I'd start with your primary clutch, inner bushing on the moveable sheave. See if you have any wobble or looseness when you grab ahold of it and try to rock it back and forth.
I had one of these that almost looks like yours. Without having both yours and mine together to compare, the width looks about the same, but mine was alot straighter (and thus longer since yours is still twisted), I might keep it for some shim stock! FYI. the moveable sheave was destroyed on mine, better get both your clutches checked out especially the primary, and align them properly when reinstalled!
That part might be completely unrelated to you speedometer issue, what condition is your speedometer cable in, since it passes nearby to the clutches?

The straight thing in the blurry pic, where did that come from: The Axle Shaft -or- the Speedo Cable end where it threads onto the right angle adapter that you removed to expose the axle shaft?

The Bearing was bad. Was a easy fix. The bearing came right off. I didn't even have to loosen the collar. Now we just got 2 feet of snow and I have to wait for the bearings to come. Thanks for all your help. If anyone knows what that metal is is that would be great. It is driving me crazy. I looked at the clutch and secondary and I don't see any problems.

It is the speedo key.

The cable is fine.

The clutch doesn't seem to have any play. Is there a way to see the inner bushing on the clutch and secondary?

that piece of metal looks like one of the hold downs for your speedo cable or wiring harness. is it rubber coated? does it have a rivet hole in it?

I wish. It is real heavy duty. No rubber or rivet. I thinking a clutch bushing. I just don't know how to tell for sure.

Is that the jack shaft bearing? I want to learn how to grease these, how often should they be greased?

The piece is a primary clutch bushing. This is the second time it happened. They tell me it is from heat.
