Hello great website first off and this is my first post. I need help on trying to figure out what is going on with this darn 1991 Exciter, there is a electrical gremlin some where it starts and idles perfect but wont rev right and the tach reads wrong, we have discovered that if the hand warmers are on it runs better but not right and really runs bad if they are off or the switch is unplugged. Any ideas will be greatly considered as it has been fighting us for a while now. Thanks in advance.....

Could be a number of things including voltage out of whack (not properly regulated), or the stator going bad. But the only way to tell for sure is to get an ohmmeter and start testing each component out. We can help you out with the procedures, but your best bet is to get a factory service manual and just follow the steps. On the other hand you could simply do what some repair shops do and employ the "shotgun diagnostics" approach . . . Just start changing components until the problem goes away. I prefer the first approach.
Thats are next step to get the ohm readings, we are starting to think its over charging because it does run better with the warmers on I have done some searches but came up with nothing Im hoping some body has ran into this before.

I forget without looking where the voltage regulator is on those models. Does your headlight and/or taillight blow bulbs

All the lights work no blowing bulbs, I did notice one the right hand side above the airbox bolt there is a 4 wire connector with a yellow wire blue stripe not connected to anything and to make matters worse some one thought that yamaha needed help wiring this sled cut and re spliced that connector we are wondering where the yellow/blue wire hooks to the wire is loose on the engine side of connector.

Not sure , who -knos... add some new ground wires between the frame , motor , gauges etc...
Had a problem with an older Yamaha ... the head light got brighter (normal) when you put the brakes on ??
A wood screw between the tail light socket and the base cured it ,,, BAD ground...and it used the brake wire ( diff circuit)
as the ground to the tail light which connected to headlight..
Worth a try

I might try that its weird that when the warmers are on it runs better. Im still wanting to know if that yellow blue wire is hooked to something or it has a different year stator in it but it could need some more grounds. If the warmer switch is on it makes me think about more grounds. Thanks for the help.
