What a machine! I have had it for about 3000 miles it has always seemed hard on oil but has recently gotten worse. just cleaned power valves they are definitely scratched up could this be contributing. also could someone post specs on oil pump settings? I do believe i know where to measure on adjusting nut. thanks Ed!

Should be about 22mm +- 1 mm. Mine went through lots of oil and it was because the line wasn't completely seated at the measuring point. Power valves wouldn't contribute to oil overusage. Adjust your throttle freeplay first then adjust oil line measurement to spec. If you still have a problem with oil usage, when the pump fails it goes full open.

Good advice above, be sure to check your cables while you turn the skis all the way each way. Sometimes cable routing causes the adjustment connection to pull apart when the handlebars are turned. But these pumps do fail and then go full open as stated above.

maybe I am not checking in the right spot? but I measure 8.5mm from the top of the jam nut to the adjuster nut.
I do think that you were correct about the cable not seating properly and that was my recent problem. is 8.5 mm wrong I have never adjusted it. At 50/1 I should only be going through less than 1 liter per tank of gas. also checked compression, pull cord side and center cylinders pump up good 90/first pull 120/2nd 130/3 134/4th clutch side cylinder goes 90,120,120,120 and maintains 120 is this related or a different thread?

Cable spec for the viper is 20.5mm +/- from the manual I have. Not sure what difference that makes when it's that short.

Have you pulled the handlebar pad to confirm that the cable end hasn't slipped out of the throttle block? There should be a bent stainless steel retaining clip that keeps the 2 cables in there seats.

so measure cable showing when separated not thread showing, thanks. cables are seated properly, looks like I got 21mm. I also have a 2" bar riser. I will keep a closer eye on seated cable and oil usage. thanks for the info.

Could be I the cable is not routed well when you turn it's pulling the cable and stroking the pump. When the pumps fail they fail at full flow. In that case you would be using a LOT of oil and having a blue cloud follow you around. That is not a good way to operate long term. Too much oil in a moder 2 stroke is bad. It's leaning it out and burning it down. There is no such thing as "extra oil" just to be safe. The only way you get away with it on the first tank for break in is because your running the engine at light load over varying speeds. If you held it pinned on the first tank down the lake it would cause damage for sure.
