I am kicking around the idea of building a 2001 improved 700 and a 98 or 99 improved 600. My question is can they be competitive or are f7's just to fast. Thinking about mainly running 1000' ft speed runs and maybe a little 500' grass drags.

F7's are that fast... the srx is just to fat... That being said they are competitive at ur back yard events and club races, if you're set up good it takes a well tuned f7 to beat you....

I would say you could do very well at 1000' events, f7 are quick, not fast. 500' grass would be tough.

Check records on NSSR web site and you will find out how competitive the SRX's are with the firecats in 1000ft. Lucky for us they split the tripple piped sleds away from the single pipers. In 1320ft here my 600 is more than competitive. I believe a 700 could be as well.
I'm kicking around the Idea too to run a Improved SRX 700, which pipes are best for a Improver 700 SRX ?
there is a Improved F7 that showed at the last few races and I talked to the owner he's claiming 189hp stock bore Improved F7 so I have my work cut out for me this summer

bender big bore 835 pipes work well and youd need to sleeve down the stingers for drag racing.
1 thing about improved, you still have to retain the stock heavy skidframe and you also have to keep the stock carbs, you can bore them but thats only about 2mm more then stock, so you limit yourself. You wont make 189hp real hp in improved form with a srx because of the carb size limit. The other thing that still bites you in the rear is the weight of the srx vs the f7 in improved.
even though it cost more youd be more competitive and level up the playing field to the f7's better in pro stock, where you can run most anything and the sled can be alot lighter. its obviously more expensive but if your going to build a race sled you want to be able to win. Youll be able to run 44mm lectron carbs, aftermarket light skidframe, aftermarket heads, ign. system mods, most everything.

I agree with Don on a couple points he has made but have to disagree that you will not be able to make 189hp with a improved stock SRX! First of all the pipes you would need are not Bender Bigbore pipes. These are a low rpm high volume pipe. The pipes you want are either the Bender mods or Jaws HR's. Both these pipes are designed for high rpm race only applications. Modified CDI boxes are mandatory with these pipes! I has personally have seen a lot of fast SRX's and built and worked on a lot as well. Can they beat the F-7? Depends on alot of things. But I can tell you one thing for sure the longer the distance the better your chance will be. At 1000 feet it's going to be close!

good point on rpm, but they(bigbore pipes) were pretty comfy running at 8800rpm. If I wanted to run higher rpm a couple cuts to them would do it. theres no giant differance between the big bore pipes and the high rpm pipes, measured them. There was a slight change in 2 spots. but easily done. I know the race pipes are hard to find vs the big bore pipes, thats why I referred to them. Possibly ,Rich might make him a set, dont know. Most times your going to make some kind of changes to pipes anyways with dyno tuning if your building a race engine so get the pipes in maximum tune with the engine.
most "drag races" for isr would be 500-660ft long, your gonna have a hard time running with a improved f7 in that distance simply because of the weight break for twins vs triple. Now if your referring to speed running it does help the triple to go longer distance.
Minimum combined weights (sled and rider):
Improved Stock 600 - 700 lbs (645 for 2 cylinder engine)
Improved Stock 700 - 750 lbs (695 for 2 cylinder engine)
Improved Stock 800 & 1000 - 775 (685 for 2 cylinder engine)
Sleds moving to higher displacement classes will not be required to meet the minimum weight for that class

Rich built me a second set last season. They are not cheap but they are still available.
Rich who?
who builds these SRX engines for Improve stock 700 or would it be cheaper to find a srx that is an Improver and go from there
There is a 01 SRX 700 Improver forsale @ $5k running 195 hp done by Justin Fuller

Rich Daly builds the pipes. It's nearly always cheaper to buy an already done sled than to build one.

if you can buy that sled for 5k, you better jump on that, I dont think you can build one for that. The cost of ,pipes, motor work, bored carbs, cdi box, race track, would be that much already. hopefully its a dialed in combo makes that a good deal for a improver

Good reading, as i'm building a improver right now. But i'm going with the bb pipes (8700-8800 rpm)
Rules here (sweden) say we can run 44mm. carb's BUT it has to be mikunis!! So i'm gonna run my machz carb's (maybe bore them out to 40?)
Not worth the extra 4mm. i would get with the old roundslide mikunis in my opinion..

That 700 improver is a great deal. For some reason though guys just don't know the value of these sleds and want them for nothing. I had a very strong and proven 600 SRX improver with a lot of extra parts. I was asking $4500 for everything and didn't get a single offer. I decided to parted it out and got almost $6000 for the parts. To built that sled would cost close to 10. Performance parts for Yammies are very hard to find and thus expensive!!!
