Hello Everyone,
I'm a newbie to the forum. I have a 1980 SRX and am currently in the process of rebuilding the motor with the intention of using it for 660ft drag. Most races around here are "snow" but usually hard pack with ice or grass underneath(start line is always torn down to the ice or grass).
My current setup is as follows:
-Comet Clutch with purple spring and N1 weights.
-16/29 gearing.
-38mm round slide powerjet mikuni carbs. Powerjet eliminated. Into stock air box.
-Stock pipes.
-New track with Chisels.
-Stock 8G9 cylinders with no porting, Stock 8J0 heads, 1980 8K2 bottom end.
I'm wondering if some experienced racers could give me advice on how to get the most out of it. I will not be in a vintage class so will be racing the new iron and could probably use any help I can get. The things I have been thinking about are.
1) I've heard the pipes from a 76 would make a noticeable improvement but I haven't seen any for sale and I suppose they would not be cheap(Not that racing is cheap.
2) I have access to race fuel so was wondering if anyone shaves the heads to get more compression and if so how much should be taken off?
3) Would it be worth trying to find bigger carbs? I know the 38s are already bigger then stock.
4) Do these cylinders flow good stock or should I be looking into porting?
Sorry for so much at once but I am getting pretty pumped to try her out and I want a good solid setup without getting to crazy(spending to much money. Did some looking around the forum for setups and found some bits and pieces but haven't had much luck. Any help would be great. Thanks Again.

love what your doing here. your gearing is wrong for 660. try 17-31. ok,i answer down your list
1. 76 pipes work, but very hard to find.
2. shaveing heads will depend on how much motor work you want. sure you can do a minor milling and you will need good fuel
3. bigger carbs only with motor work
4. porting always works good. the srx will run with good clutching and gearing. 3:16 (yammie tony)

Thanks for the quick reply. I will start looking for some better gears. When you say minor head milling do you mean like 0.020? Any idea what kind of compression that would give? Do you know anywhere I could get some porting specs or a good person to send them to? Thanks
I appreciate your advice. Looks like you have some fast sleds.

if you get to around 150-55 psi, really works good. so sure .020 off or cut will add compression. again good octane would be required. 3:16 (yammie tony)
