I have a 02 viper. I needed to replace the drive shaft bearings, case side wore out. So I had a drive shaft from a Mtn Viper with 8 tooth drivers. I had this installed so I can now clear for studs. I have a reverse set up from I believe a 97 XTC that was installed a few years back. My question is what gears should I run now that I have switched to the 8 tooth? And does anyone have a set for sale? Thanks Scott

9 tooth to 8 tooth is an 11% (roughly) gear down, so depending upon your target ratio just factor this in. There is a chart and even a spreadsheet that can help you in the Tech Pages.

24-37 is a good ratio with 8 tooth. 1.74

If the reverse came out of an xtc it may be 39t bottom gear. The parts list for the reverse kit on all the other makes (non viper) sleds show a 39t gear. That's what I found in my mountain max when I geared it down this fall.
I have a set of 8 tooth anti rachet drivers if still need text me at 814-434-6022

We switched to 8 tooth on our Viper as well. We did not change the OEM gearing. Now, the sled seems to always be clutched perfect. The combination of deep snow and groomed trail. Can't be happier. The OEM gearing was too steep in my opinion as well. Top speed may have dropped a couple MPH, but really how many times are you running over 100 mph?? I prefer to have increadible torque and power at all times. Al

I actually run 7 tooth 2.86 drivers with stock gearing. At times I wish I had a lower gear, and others I wish it were higher, so I must be in the middle.

Where or how do I know what chain I have? As I'm looking for some gears I'm finding silent 13, silent 15 and HYVO 13 Are the gears different from non reverse to reverse?

I think you will want a 24t top to go with the 39t bottom you most likely have in there now from the reverse if you want to stay close to what you have now. If you never use the top end you may want to drop it down some. You may need a longer chain.
The only way to know for sure what chain and gears you have is to pull the cover and inspect the parts, things could have been changed after all these years. That said, the original chain and gear set was silent 13 wide for the XTC's, so that's where my money's at.
The upper gears are the same between non-reverse and reverse. The lower gears are different between non-reverse and reverse.
You don't want to mix the gears and chain up in your chaincase between silent 13, silent 15, and HYVO. Keep all the same type in your chaincase. You likely still have the silent 13, which is very common to find parts for and also the least expensive.
Silent 15 was used on 98-99 SRX.
HYVO was used on 00-02 SRX and all Viper/Venom, and I believe the few Venture 600/700's that share the Viper/Venom chassis/bodywork.
