Ive been getting weak spark and sometimes having a hard time starting it cold or warm. Now today im getting zero spark and the headlight doesnt light up while pulling it over. Does this sound like a stator issue? The flywheel is rusty and i thought it was that at first but... Sled is a 97

Yes, that does sound like it could be a stator issue. I'm not saying it is your issue for sure, but it certainly could be. Run the ohm tests and see what it gives you.

Then another question. What year stators fit the 97. All the new ones i can find are listed for years 98-99

My background is more in motorcycle/atv ignitions... but CDI based ignitions are almost always fully powered by their own coil in the stator. The fact that your headlight is not working would tell me its either a much larger problem or just a coincidence. I would confirm you don't have any rubbed through wires going to your stator. Another item to look at closely would be your ignition switch (key switch).

I had one ran fine when cold when it warmed up in 20 min of running it would lose spark turned out cdi was bad. But before that I did had to put a stator in it. 97-00 stator 600-700cc triple are same

I checked all the wires and even tried unplugging the ignition switch. I also looked for spark with the headlight and dash unhooked. Im pretty sure the headlight was dimming the last time i rode it. Im thinking a combination of rusty flywheel and bad stator. Cant really tell till i take it off. This isnt urgent anymore by the way. Missed out on my trip :(

I would think ground/flywheel are the main issue as all portions of the stator are failing to work. it could still be the stator for sure but seems little but suspicious both went.

UPDATE: If I only have one coil hooked up i will get some spark on the plug but any more than 1 and theres nothing (yes i tried swapping and switching coils) Last time I went to check if the headlight worked it was outside in the light but in the dark i happened to notice that it does dimmly light up when pulling the engine over. Im back to square one and think a rusty flywheel is my issue. what do you guys think. I just got a puller today but havent got it off

Do as much of the cheap and easy stuff that you can, but start looking for a good stator when you're not doing the cheap and easy stuff.

A different but similar experience: Different in that the engine was a twin, so both plug wires came from one ignition coil. Similar in that sled had no spark, so I hooked up a single coil from a triple sled, and had spark but weak. Re-hooked up the original coil and sled ran, but not so good, and only around the yard once or twice. Back to the single coil test, got spark, back to original coil and sled ran like crap for a few seconds and died. After a little more dinking around like this, finally couldn't get any spark at all. Replaced stator and both sparkplugs were LIT UP! Sled runs.

Did all the ohm and wire and coil and plug cap checks, and different CDI, and cleaned rusty flywheel, etc. None of it helped until the stator was replaced. FWIW

oh man hope you get her fix up!!i have had all 3 of my machines go down this week. my fourwheeler brunt up its rings, the grizzly had a airfilter problem it came apart on my sxr is down waiting for a coil. oh these machines are fun when they dont have problems:offtopic: get the ole girl up and going again devinzz
