I have a fresh rebuild top to bottom. Going to use this as a rider for the kids. I got it together and have begun testing it and break in. Starts great other than really cold. Idles great. First run got about 50 mph out of it. Secondary spring is a little soft. Cleaned both clutches. Cleaned airbox and exhaust. It just doesn't sound right and it seems to be working way too hard. Could the clutch spring cause all this? Track too tight? It is hanging a couple inches down when on a stand. I opened it up on the stand and speedo read 95. Is it possible the jackshaft bearing and bogie wheels are holding it back? Also I assumed the clutches were aligned, the carb and airbox are a pain to to fit properly. Everything seems straight body is not bent. Tried a new belt today and burnt it a little. Seemed to run about the same 50 mph and that was it. I didn't want to hold it wot that much today but got it back out of the field before I had any worse problems and loaded it back up. It is stock never bored. It was last run about 5 years ago. Plugs are looking good and I am still premixing 91 for another tank at least. Not sure what else to try stator is also new. Sorry for the long post just trying to paint a better picture.

Ive read pretty much the whole forum and came up with a few of these issues as well as other sites. I probably answered my own questions, however i know very little about clutches. If the weights and sliders are ok and i did grease everything would replacing the springs give me the top end? I believe the secondary spring is weak but have a hard time believing that it would do this. I checked out our enticer and both srx's all 79's feel the same??? I guess order all new bearings and springs and start there.

did you take the chaincase apart? can you turn the track easily by hand with it on the stand? I put the lower gear on wrong and had the same issue with my 80 exciter...

I did take it apart all the way and completely cleaned it. Put fresh oil in etc. Are you saying if it doesnt roll freely it would mean i would have the gear in wrong. I didnt think you could put it in any other way. I found a keihin manual online and this says i may have my jetting too lean on an adjustable pilot but im pretty sure this pilot doesnt have the five notches to adjust???

Clutches are probably worn and needing a rebuild. Clean won't help worn. Belt condition and adjustment is also a key to proper performance.

There should be very little play in any of the bushings or weight/roller pin holes. Surfaces of all moving parts should be smooth and straight.

Make sure all is good here first. If not nothing else you do will matter.

Snow in the forecast finally. What a messed up winter. Its been 20 below for 3 months and now its been 40 and a lot of the snow has melted this early. Hopefully I can test this thing.

exciter issues

you stated your running premix are you also running the oil injection ? too much oil being delivered will also cause a low top end speed just my thought
