I'm looking for suggestions..I just recently bought this sled and have about 3900 miles on it. It is burning too much oil, 1 quart per 5 gallons (20:1) and I brought it to the dealer and they found nothing wrong. They said possibly bad gas or something like that, but I've burned nothing but 93 octane and the fuel was almost empty when I bought it. I have filled the gas tank about 5 times and no change. What can I do here? My plugs get loaded up with an extended period of slow, windy trails. My local elevation is about 1400 ft.

The oil pump may of failed it goes real rich on oil. I had a 97 MM 600 that did the same thing. If not, the oil pump has index marks and they should almost line up.

if i remember correctly, there was a recall, or bulletin for replacing the oil pumps on 97 600 engines. something to check out..

My 97 600 MM has a real thirst for oil and gas. Lately the oil consumption seems to be getting worse. Also, there is a bit of oil on the bottom of the cowling. I can't see any obvious leaks though. Does this sound like an oil pump as well?

Right on with the recall, the '97 600's were equipped with oil pumps that progressively failed rich. My VT600 got to the point where I had the cable disconnect and it was still pumping over a quart per tank.

Your friendly Yamaha dealer should have information on this pump. mine was replaced under warranty during that original season.

Well, hopefully the dealer does know something about this, I have had this in 3 weeks ago to check this and now I'm bringing this in Wednesday again. I will ask about the recall and post my results of tomorrow's visit. Earlier, they told me that the oil pump settings were correct.

For some strange reason that pump put out more oil as it failed. Your settings can be correct or in my case, completely disconnected and the pump will continue to put out more and more oil.

Good luck and I hope your dealer does the right thing.

Everyone but my local dealer thinks I'm burning too much oil. They said a quart every 5 gallons is about normal for late 80's to mid 90's Yamahas. They now tell me I should use 8 spark plug instead of 9 if I'm having low range problems, or I could pay $180 for a carb cleaning. I just don't know....they gave me the "if you still have problems call" line. I call and can't seem to get this taken care of! I asked about a possible recall and didn't get a straight answer. It would be nice to fill the oil at the start of every trip, not once ore twice in the middle of a long ride. The dealer also said if there was a pump problem, it wouldn't be pumping too much...blah blah blah

find another dealer.keep going to a different one until you find one that will help you. it seems that once they have your money they don't give a f&*k about you. there was a oil pump recall/bullitin, but if they will still honor ir is another thing.

There was definatley a recall on that pump. It may have been done on that sled. The problem with the pump was a cover plate. The 2 screws holding the cover plate would back out allowing the oil to drain out into the belly pan and not into the motor. I know this from experience (full melt down) before the recall. So with his sled loading up I doubt it's the oil pump but check the allignment though. You can back it off as well, I always ran mine lean. It's sounds more like a good carb cleaning is needed. If the carbs are dirty thats what it does, loads up, runs slugishand uses more oil and gas.

did you replace the pump, what did the other dealer have to say about it?

I've been lazy and haven't called anyone else yet, but this weekend I'll be talking with a friend of a friend who works on these sleds.

I've read a lot of posts and found something I never checked...and the dealer never thought of. I checked my throttle free play and it was 7mm, I adjusted down to 2mm and hopefully this will cure my problem. I will update after Pres Day.

Got close to 85-90 miles a quart... a little better...I will adjust closer to 1 mm. It is actually around 3 right now.
