Residue from old carnk seal

Has anyone had a problem with a residue from the old crank seal like the mating surface was treated with a form a gasket before the two halves were put together? How do I get it off without being overly aggressive? What if anything should I use before I put it back together?

Take a razor blade and scrape it with the blade 90* to the surface. Or use a scotch brite pad.

I hit it with fine crocus cloth, wipe it clean and go.
