Well, One followed me home, looking at the serial numbers, it says 8R6. Looking at the list here in the sticky section, it shows up as '82 SRV, no 8R6 as SS 440's. is that a misprint or do I have a freak?

8R6 is 82 SRV.
Tunnel swap done to an SS440?
82 SRV had a 121 track with a skid identical to an 81 SRX with a tad bit shorter rails. SS should be a 116 track.

Thanks Phil, I think you right the rivets on my 81 and 87 SRV and 83 VM are all round head rivets, the ones on this 440 are poppers, so I would guess somewhere it was changed out.
My understanding on tracks and rear skids is on SRV only. Not sure about SS 440's I thought 80-82 used the 116 track and a common early skid. 83 and up got the 121 and the skid where the two shocks come together in the center on a bracket. I think it was called Pro Action. The SS 440 looks like the org in my 81 SRV which did have 116 track. The skid in my 67 SRV looks the same as what came in my VM.
I guess my question now is, Are all SS440's the same at which point it doesn't matter what year it is

80 SS will be the odd ball if it was not updated other than that for the most part pretty much the same from 80-85

Don't worry Chuck, Option 3 would be putting the spare 540 VM engine in it

80 ss had smaller carb different ignition are the main thing motors are very close if I remember right it was just the heads the 80's had a tad more squish I would have to put the 80's and 81-85 cylinders infront of me again to make sure clutches there where updates originally came with the srx primary then the later ones had the ypz primary there was also a update for the secondary for more pretension adjustment basically same clutch just 3 holes (A,B,C) in stead of the 1 ........rear skide on the 80 was originally steel like the 80 srx but was updated along with the track which was a 3.29 pitch 116'' which was changed to a 2.52 pitch 116'' 80's had the large steel rear bumper and 3 piece front bumper and steel bellypan sides 81 and newer have aluminum belly pan sides and one piece bumper and a rear bumper that was black and shaped like a EX 340/440 but aluminum
