good idea or waste of time?

Have a 2002 sx viper 128 edge skid, re worked viper front shocks with triple rate coils, custom seat and tunnel extension with 1.352 cobra. Snowmobiling is just getting too expensive now a days to go on long trips like I use to do. Use to put on 2000 to 3000 miles on I. One year. But any who, lookin for more power, tried bender pipes, liked them but sucked a ton of gas when jetted properly and tried hauck pipes but was too peaky for me.

What do you guys think of me getting a 2001 srx cdi, running bender pipes and spin it to about 8500-8600. You think it would back the timing off enough to still be easy on the fuel bill and have that reliablity a stock srx would have. Any opinions would be greatly apperciated
 

Trying to make my viper more of a fun back country sled. Woods riding mainly and some trail riding
 
Id think putting srx pipes and srx cdi would help the fuel prob. Just takes some fabrication on the pipes to work.
 
just changing the cdi wont make the gas mpg go up to that of a srx, it will still use alot of fuel as the bender pipe design will require a large pilot jet. Youd be better off as suggested to go with srx pipes fitted to the viper, srx cdi and then use a srx carb rack.
 
so would it still be fuel hog as if i never even added the srx cdi or would it be better and safer?, seems as if it would work because back off timing, use less fuel to not detonate
 
better yet, has anyone ever done this, i did a search and nothing came up. We can all assume it will be bad but i am just really wondering.

its not going to be bad, the sled will just make LESS power and still use a bunch of gas.

its the pipes design that will still require a larger then stock pilot jet. A viper bone stock uses a 45 pilot, a srx uses either a 40 or 42.5. The pilot jet is where you spend 75% of your time trail riding and hence where your gas mpg comes from, the pilot and needle are about 75% total of your mileage, the main(solely) is not used as much as you think as all carb circuits overlap. The stock srx pipes will outperform those bender pipes with the kind of combo your gonna use(srx cdi,srx carb rack on a viper engine) and yield the better gas mpg pretty easily.
 
I tried that same setup with benders, as mrviper stated, the bender pipes need big pilot jets even with the 01 srx cdi box I used. From what little riding I did with it it seemed to gussle gas pretty good. U would have a lot of time into it before it's right, ur clutching, gearing, figuring out ur jetting, and if u mod airbox or not and vented to atmosphere or airbox. It was a dog unless everything was perfect, had better luck just leaving the viper cdi in it, if I remember right the jetting didn't change a lot between the two boxes on the low end, mostly change the mains. If u have the skills to and the srx pipes work I would go that route, others have had really good luck with that setup.

Piped vipers can still be reliable as long as u are jetted right and have all the other cooling mods and such to go along with it, they can really run good also.
 
I am in the process of installing srx pipes on my viper
I have the manifold made and the pipes fit pretty good,just need to
figure out how to get the hood to drop about an inch.I havent had time
to load any pics but will do so with explanations on how I did it.
 
If ur good with fiberglass I have seen people modify the hoods and give them the bulge similar to srx hood to make them fit, others I've seen on here cut the bellypan so set pipes lower if that's what is hitting. A lot of piped vipers end up shimming the hood hinge to raise the hood off the pipes a little.
