going to upgrade the wifes sled this season, I have a line on an 02 Viper I think with Ohlins, my question is, what are the major differences, besides the power valves/engine? suspension better on one than the other? which does better mileage? headlights? She rides very well, and was sick of her sxr 500, which I had tuned very well. just don't want to step down in the ride department with the Viper, MPG is also a big deal, the SXR500 sucked! the Viper do the same as my srx? how bout' the sxr700?

Both my wife and daughter also ride a viper, you cant go wrong. What year sxr you looking at? That is the big difference. The viper needs a hair more maintence with the PV but is a rock solid engine with some small changes. IE moving carb needs and such. I have 4 vipers all together and 2 are over 7000mi with no problems. The viper does very well on MPG, im about 15+ stock on mine. The suspension will be roughly the same except if the viper has ohlins that is a major upgrade. The viper will have the dual headlights (so will the sxr depending on year). That sxr also has a bullet prof engine. So depending on year and wants it up to you. I went with the vipers!! IMO stock for stock a viper will out perform a SXR all day long.

Viper=few more hp sxr=proven reliable. If the sxr500 suspension is setup for you wife you can just swap the shocks over to either sled. Id lean more towards the viper because of the ohlins and its imo better looking.

I would try for 02, or newer SXR because of the headlights. What do you mean "moving carb"? Power valve cleaning and carb cleaning is not an issue, was mainly concerned about the suspension and mpg. Thanks for the input guys, looks like it will be the Viper, as I am having a hard time finding a 02+ SXR for sale in my area.

Pretty sure he was referring to raising the needles on the viper carbs. Darn auto correct on these phones

The 2001 700 sxr's had the better headlight, I think the sxr 600's didn't have the better headlight till 02.

I am also curious as to what you mean by moving the carbs needles? Are you riching up the fuel mixture to help with some of the overheating?

Richen the needles to help with the hot timing the viper cdi's have in the mid rpm range

well, I (my wife) is now the proud owner of an 02 viper, 2600 and change on it, runs perfect. No ohlins on it though. It has a Bender clutch kit on it, different helix, weights and springs, not sure how it works, any info on that? speedo does not work, have to chase down broken wire, new speed sensor, and tried a good head unit, and needs a dash. Also picked up a SRX 600 while I was there with Ohlins and also with 2600 miles!
