Needing help if there is any. Have 97 700 sx with bad mag side crank bearing(2). I see there was a update to a wider single bearing. But kinda pricey. Is there any other option out there? Sled only has 900 miles needs nothing other then the mag crank bearing. Thanks!

In 98 Yamaha changed to a single wide bearing due to the high failure rate of the double 97 bearing setup they used. Cheapest way to repair is to install the original 97 bearings again. Going the 98 route will cost you more but should last a lot longer. You will need to drill the case for the lock pin the newer bearing needs. Its not a hard mod to do. While you have it apart have the crank timing checked. Mine was slightly out. Made a large difference in performance with a trued crank.
Having only 900 miles Im guessing the seal failed causing your bearing failure. My bearings and seal failed at 4k miles or so.
IMO if you are only putting on a few miles a year go with the original bearing setup and spray down the mag side seal with a light oil when the sled is in storage. If you plan to do a lot of miles per season I would opt for the 98 style bearing.

I think this is one of the problems that is a hit and miss from sled to sled...... I had a 97 700SX that at 2000 miles I installed PSI pipes and spun my SX at 9200RPM's for the next 7000 miles with zero issues on the stock crank...... same with the 98 SRX that my friend had that supposedly had crank twisting issues, his with fully studded track and year after year with zero issues......just not sure why some have the issue and some keep on going..... I guess my whole point was that I would just go with a new stock 97 bearing and not do the 98 update..... Tod $.0.02

do the 98 update. it will be worth it in the long run. you know that bearing has problems and your tearing it down to replace it why not do it right? will be better for re sale to have the updated bearing.
