Looks like I'll be picking up a 85 vmax 540. Always wanted one. Don't know much about them. This one is gonna need a little work. I guess he blew the clutch up last year. But I think I have a comet that will work for it. It came off my v4 so should be a 108 and I read it will work on the 85. Needs some carb work too. Is it hard to find carbs for these? Supposedly they were working on the carb and dropped some parts into the belly pan. Picking it up for a song and I'll do some prelims on it when I get it. Looks like a pretty good sled for a slight restore or something. I'll jump over to vintagevmax to hunt around but I'm more familiar with this sight so I thought I would post. Any info or praise on this sled would be appreciated I'm excited. I'll post pics In second.

if that's the sled in the pic's then thats a 84 or 85 if it got the panl's & hood on it.nice looking restore sled.

I asked for the vin number. Hopefully he will get it to me tonight and I'll share it. Then I'm sure someone can tell me the year. I'll pick it up sat

Vin will be 80N-xxxxxx

108's don't work well on those sleds. Clutch bore is odd compared to most. If one off a V-4 works that would be news to me.

Search your Q's at vintagevmax and you'll get most of what you need to know.

You probably dont need the entire carb. 99% of all mikuni vm carbs have interchangable parts. The jets would be specific for that sled but kind of a universal thing there as well. You should be able to identify the missing parts easily since there is not many parts in the carb to begin with.
Ops is correct with the clutch. I however didnt know about the bore size. From what I remember the Vx4 has a big offset and tall cap that I would think would hit the hood panel and you would need 5,000 shims behind the secondary to align the belt.

Excuse my ignorance on the subject. I was basing my clutch info off of a vintage max classified for an 87 with a comet 108 on it. I cross referenced that clutch and it had Vmax 4 under the possible sleds it was for. Anyway. So. It's an 85. Carbs shouldn't be bad to re-do. What clutch should I be looking for. Guess it has a comet on it. What prelims do you suggest. I may hop over and start a vintagevmax post and start over. Thanks
