I long tracked my viper last fall and ran a 20/38 gearing in it. Same gearing I ran when it was a shorty triple piped. I was wondering if i should switch to a 21/39 gearing on it since the longer track. To me even though its still triple piped it seems like its geared too high on the bottom gear for the track. What do you guys think I should do for a gear setup??

gearing simply comes down to what your doing with the sled, if you do alot of deep snow riding youll want lower gearing, if you do more groomed trail higher speed riding youll want taller gearing. Anytime you rev a engine higher you automaticly gear the sled up taller without touching the gears, so for example if you have stock 22/38 viper gears and then rev the engine to the cpr pipes of 9200rpm, your already geared taller then the 22/38 is because the engine is over revving and making the gearing taller.
gear the sled for the riding you do 90% of the time. Decide what your top speed is and gear accordingly. Lower gearing makes the sled more snappy and quicker in a short run due to the torq. multipulcation, but it also doesnt keep the belt in a more efficient 1;1 ratio depending on how far you push the mph achieved as the belt will go into overdrive.
I like to keep the top sprocket as large as I can and still achieve the ratio i want to run for the mph I intend to run 90% of the time I ride.

Thanks for the nice write up mr.viper! Im running bender triples on mine so the rpm is 8800. I believe i need a bigger bottom gear on my sled. Seems like its almost burning the belt when I do a launch. I run trails about 90% of the time but always go through a few fields to get to the trails. I might just give it a try with a 21/39 setup and see how it feels. Wow I just looked at the price of gears and what the heck happened. I got my 20t gear 2 years ago for 25 bucks new and now they are over 60 bucks. Wonder why gears doubled in price.

I would run the stock gearing.
You have as much HP as a stock SRX with pipes so I think your just wasting fuel by gearing your sled down too much, especially if most of your riding is on trails
I would really hate to see a 500 twin skidoo pull up along side you on the trail and say "see ya"

You realize that 20/38 (1.9) is a lower gear ratio than 21/39 (1.85)?? If you ran 20/39 you be lower than what you have now 1.95

I would never have that problem lol. I've raced 800 skidoo revs and arctic cat 900s and never had a problem smoking them with a 20/38 gearing.
Mysledblows,
Im not 100% sure what im going to do on gearing. I might just try stock gearing and then try a 21t on top. I remember someone on here told me that going with a 144in track to drop a tooth.
