My 98 is due for pistons, I am pretty sure they are out of spec. (13,000 miles)
The 98-99 piston is 8DN-11631-00-A0 retail 158.99
2000-02 8DN-11631-20-A0 retail 127.99
I understand the newer models have different port timing on the cylinders, what is different on the pistons ?
And the Viper has a 8CH-11631-00-A0 retail 82.99
Could I get a little more HP running a different piston ?
Thanks for the comments.

Not sure what the difference is but you can get the 98 pistons cheaper through partzilla, $120 each

nodifferance in pistons, just the new ones for 2000-02 have a coating to help with rings sticking, any year piston will interchange. Also those are not viper pistons you looked up but sx700 pistons and they will not interchange, a viper piston will interchange but the prefix on the piston is 8ek

Thanks for the correction mrviper. The price on the newer pistons is considerably cheaper than the 98-99.
Thinking I will go with them.

wasnt trying to correct you just keep you from ordering the wrong ones, stick with any of the 8dn pistons and 8ek pistons and youll be good.

As long as there is a thread started on this, I would like to ask a few myself.
I was going thru parts bins at a swap meet this past Saturday and ran across quite a few NOS pistons in the OE box.
Question #1. Does 8ca, 8ab, 8cr etc etc indicate specific years of production?
Question #2. What does the ....-10-68 signify http://partstream.arinet.com/Mobile...h1U9eQfRpEyA4T1sl15JHlPJdmUlqQbgmDodicM1.html
There is also another on this sled that is a -10-90. This is a 96 XT6.

the 8ab,8ca would be the designation for a vmax, usually a twin used those prefixs. A srx uses 8dn,or 8df, viper uses 8ek. This is how I knew he was looking at the wrong piston by the prefix on the part number. the rest of the number is just the numbering system but you asked about the end, and thats usually where the updated part is changed in the numerical system, so its the updated pistyon if the end is differnt. The 600 twins had a problem for a bi8t withthe piston ring locating pin coming out and letting the ring spin, then would catch the exhaust post and ruin the cylinder and pisrton, yamaha updated the pistons.
