Want to remove one layer from head gasket on 00 MM 700. What is minimum fuel to run? can I get away with using 87 or should I use 90+? I know that if running just one layer (2 removed) you have to run 90+, stock can use 87, but what about with 2 in and one removed?
700 MM, reed notch, Tempaflow-146.3s straight across, 300-1500 ft

I run regular in my SXr no problem. When I can I run Premium but have never had a problem and I have one layer removed.

Thanks, I kind-a thought so, but doesn't hurt to ask.

High octane is recommended but 87 is safe. I would run higher whenever you can.

I would spend the extra 10 cents a gallon for mid-grade at minimum. Its alot cheaper that parting with $1000 to rebuild your motor.

if you are running pipes i wouldnt remove a layer. look at grape apes 97 sx, it went down with two layers of gasket triple pipes and 89 octane fuel. better safe then stranded. especially being in alaska. ski

No pipes. Refuse to spend $7-800 for hp I don't need (not to say I wouldn't LIKE 25 more hp, but don't NEED it). Just trying to get the absolute best performance from "stock" configuration. My goal is to get the best combination of performance, fuel economy, clean emmissions and low noise I can with the sled. So far have put TempaFlow, and switched to Blue Marble oil. Thinking about Swain Tech coating on piston domes and head, and ceramic coating exhaust to get better/cleaner burn. Any other ideas?
Right now, top speed is 68mph on hard pack. 2" track, 8-tooth drivers and 21/40 gearing don't add up to a speed demon that's for sure, but it gets there quick . I'm going to change to the same gearing as on my 99 MM which is 23/40 for just a little more top end. I love to ride powder, but mostly in the swamps and trees, not into steep & deep, so the rise in gearing is ok.

WrdAL, My 02700MM has only a single layer in it and the stock single pipe. I had the dealer do it at 100 miles, I now have 2600 or so. originally I was running low or medium grade with no problems thinking that I had 2 layers in there. One day while messing around with things, I got to looking at the nubs that stick out on the headgasket from the heads and noticed that there was only one there.I'm feeling very lucky. Now, I run the higher grade most of the time, but have used the medium grade many times with no troubles. Just watch where you buy your gas. I have had good luck with Fred Meyers, shell, chevron. The rest suck. I have had freeze up problems with the rest in cold weather. Soc

Soc, Been running mostly FredMeyer fuel for 3 years now. Usually run the mid grade in the sleds anyway, but heading to Petersville for 5 days in Feb and won't have access to Freddies for the trip and don't know what might be avail there. Know what you mean about some of the others being junk. I'll just take a bunch of Octane Booster and Iso along.
When I moved up here in 89, found out that all fuel in Alaska comes from either of 2 refineries, Kenai or North Pole. Almost all of Anch fuel comes from Kenai, each vendor (chevron etc) puts in thier "blend" of additives, but some vendors have priority over others thus some vendors get "older" gas or gas thats been in the tanks longer. Found this out when I worked at a Chevron station when I first got up here.
