I have three Yamaha Vmax’s; 2003 tripple, 1998 twin and a 1995 pogo stick. I just acquired the 1998 and when I was cleaning the carbs I noticed that unlike the other two sleds there is no strainer in the fuel intake line. I removed the screws, pulled out the brass fitting and there is no screen dome on the top of it. Is this normal or is the screen missing? I am taking about the one in the float bowl.

did you look it up on a parts list for that year? Partzilla has a parts sheet on there web site. You can check the parts break down for the carbs and see if its there.
The part you are referring to I Think,, is not necessary for the sled to run, they are just a pre filter for your main jets. The sled should run fine without it. If your carbs diagram calls for them, i would get them just for peace of mind. Sometimes they age and become loose on the brass tube that holds them so they get removed.
