Hey guys I was wondering if anybody knew the wear tolerance on the 02 viper. I've got some used cylinders and want to make sure there not screwed. Thanks.

I would lightly hone them, install new pistons and rings and ride it..............

Hard to tell from pictures. Use your finger and feel around for nicks and scores. Take measurements from all different parts of the cylinder don't just measure one spot. Use a bore gauge and check with dial calliper. Measure top then check in the skirts turn and check middle etc...as long as they are in spec after a hone then I'd say your golden.

Why does it have yellow tinge to it though is that nikasil wear?

The top of that cylinder doesn't look too healthy. Neither does the piston. Try to get a good measurement at the very top there. Seems to be the worst wear spot

When you hone it that glaze will come out

I've got new spi pistons for it. I just do t know if I want to do the cylinders. They don't seem to have any cracks and they feel great and smooth. I'll get the bore gauge out this week I guess.

I just don't really know a lot about nikasil. Does it wear thin? Other than obvious cracks and nicks is there anything to look for? Is that yellow area just glazing?

Yeah I think it's just glazing from the oil. I've seen it in most 5000+ mile sleds. Some say it's from using synthetic oil but who knows its just the nature of the beast. As long as the cylinder is round, in spec, not cracked scratched or scored your in good shape. Check around the ports to make sure the nikasil isn't flaking and that's about all you can do. The nikasil is harder than the ring or the piston so it takes a hell of a lot to wear it out. I've seen these 700s well into 30,000km mark still in spec.
