BTW the egt's were between 1050 and 1120, sled was not being pushed hard... 2 guesses, 1 poor fuel and detonation, or bad crank seals...

I even managed almost 10 miles of riding after this blew. If I put it back together right now I could still start it

damn dude! that hurts. i am hoping it was just bad gas. all you can do is put it together with new stuff, fire it up spray ether or propane around the crank seals and see if it increases rpms. if not ride it. if it does idle up, tear it down and split the cases for new seals. gonna need a new head for sure, mpi has peaks better cooling less prone to deto. man that sux! guess you not going with me friday huh? i am looking for someone to go with as lynne is sick and i need to ride. wawa has more snow now than they did all of last year. and feb and march are the heavy snow months. did someone say offtrail? ski

I took out 1 cyl. on my Viper last year on rode it back 6 miles. I called my dealer and he told me to put it back together, put the stock exhaust back on it and bring it in. It started right up and rode it on to the trailer.
Yet another advantage to a tripple cyl. engine.
Tom
BTW the dealer covered the damage. piston/rings/bearing, cyl. head, exhaust valve, gaskets and labor even though he knew about the pipes. Saved me over $1100 in parts alone.

Funny..you can always tell a serious SX engine by the colour of its head gasket..high tak red lol. I had one look like that..I thought it was bad gas (I always think that) but I think it was more like bad jetting..I have a habit of being dumb lol.

ya, that's my default answer to, it's often the correct one tho, gas aint what it used to be, I don't trust little mom and paps gas stations for the sleds.

Stay away from the Peak head. It may cause you more headaches than it's worth. I had one guy who burned down 3 times after putting on a peak head with the specified domes and every time they said it had to be bad gas. Put the stock head back on and never had a lick of trouble since!

I agree with Spec for the 3-5 hp gain the extra heat and compression combined with the worst gas avalible in the world. You want stock gaskets and a stock head. I did the thin gasket and I will never go back to it. With pipes if the mfg. did not create them with the thin gasket you can actually change your wave timing. My SXR is stronger with a stock gasket and stock head and my CPR's then it was with thin gasket and CPR's. I also have no worries about bad fuel (well less worries). In NYS they went to 10% methanal last year. Our gas is crapola. Doug
