What is the difference between an srx and viper crank? I think the srx is heavier so i am guessing it is better to use. I plan on buildng a replacement for my current 2001 with 8500 on it.

Viper crank is about 1.5 lbs lighter than the srx crank. From what I've heard...they'll give you about the same HP. I have a viper crank in my srx right now.

the gain in weight loss from the viper crank is equal to the better pumping efficency the srx full circle crank has so its a even output at the end, no measurable differance other then the viper crank will slightly rev qucker, its marginal though.

I get it, give up 1.5 lbs and a small bit of strength. So i should stick with an srx crank. Can you recommend a good source for one and or a good rebuilder if i find a core?

I really don't think one crank would be stronger than the other. There is a rebuilt viper crank on ebay. http://www.ebay.com/itm/yamaha-viper-srx-700-crank-crankshaft-/231393195552?hash=item35e01bf620&vxp=mtr

no differance in strength, either one will take anything you can give it. Its a even draw as to which ones better, no differance thats really of any value on dyno. So get whatever one you can for a good price.
I have a good used srx crank thats been trued and welded, I would sell it for $375
Theres a guy on here who sells rebuilt viper cranks for like $450, I bought from him before and it was good/welded no run out problems, his user is sxr1000, name is Lyle.

Personally, if I had the choice between an used viper vs srx crank, I would go with the SRX. Although both cranks are as strong, the viper one usually has more wear because of higher heat + more aggressive port timing compared to the SRX.

is there anything to be gained in sending the crank and pistons out to be balanced? if so who is the vendor of choice?
ALSO: I will be putting a motor together as a spare. Not interested in big HP increases. I want something that will give me another 8000 miles of wide open QUEBEC TRAIL RIDING like the stocker did. Quite impressive that this motor has been through what it has been through without nary a wimper. When I took it apart for rings at 7000 it looked mint BUT I want a spare...Just in case..
